Cough/grunt tic

About a month ago, my DS came home from school and was constantly clearing his throat. This continued for a few weeks and now, the cough has been replaced by a sort of grunting sound. I believe this to be a tic. Worse in the evening/when he is tired and barely-there in the morning. Somewhere in between after school. He is four and a half.

The timing of these symptoms started approximately one week after the nasal flu vaccination. This is an observation.

Question, have you experienced anything similar with your child having a tic? How long did it last? Did you see your GP?

We are planning on taking him to the doctor next week, to get him checked over btw.

Thank you for your time/insights.

My daughter coughs and grunts constantly and has done since she was 11 months abs she is now 9 years. It gets worse when she is anxious or upset.... I believed it to be a tick but she was diagnosed with severe asthma when she was about 5/6 years old and she grunts/coughs due to the airways becoming restricted. It does get worse after the flu spray but it definitely isn't the cause.

My daughter did the same thing for several weeks when she was about 4 or 5, constantly clearing her throat although she was otherwise well. It would drive me crazy sometimes but was concerning as well as I wasn't sure if there was something physically wrong or a tic developing.
I spoke to her peadiatrician about it, she said in her experience it was fairly common and didn't think it was a tic. She has asthma but it's fairly mild so don't know if that contributed. Anyway.... it just stopped after a few weeks and it's now several years later it's never happened again! So hopefully your LO will stop soon but if you are concerned speak to a doctor.
