Dd has had diarrhoea for 4+ days, no other real symptoms other than a slight temperature on day one. Yesterday she seemed a bit better and was due to return to school this morning but has woken up with symptoms again (running to the loo). It’s hard to know for sure how often she’s going, she has ASD and poor communication, she has said she has tummy pain when going to the loo. She has a habit of eating things that she shouldn’t but we also had a take away at the weekend (she has been unwell since).

Tried to fill the form in for a online consultation with GP but it’s saying because she has had symptoms for more than 48 hours we need to dial 111, but that seems silly. I don’t want to be told to take her to the hospital as they have a covid outbreak there at the moment. Do I just wait for surgery to open and then call for an appointment? I don’t think they are doing 1:1 appointments right now.

She had a covid test when symptoms started and that was all clear (tested because she had a temperature). No one else in the house has any symptoms.

Unless the child is concerning-looking in other ways (eg dehydrated) it is unlikely that they will need specific medical treatment. Most gastroenteritis is due to viruses and even for bacterial causes there isn't proven benefit to antibiotics for the commoner bugs - the body tends to deal with them over 3-7 days without help.

The advice for parents here is quite helpful:
