Hi there - my son is 16 months old, has recurring glue ear but also only mild hearing loss. At the audiology tests he appeared to respond to the tones - but I’m not convinced his hearing loss is mild. He is scoring 5/60 on communication development and we are concerned about ASD. He has repeated throat infections and thick congestion- he has been ill consistently for 4-5 months. Does anyone have experience with this?

Have you tried using Otovent? It's a balloon device that is inflated using one nostril at a time. Really helped my son with his glue ear symptoms but didn't solve it long term unfortunately and he eventually got grommets when he was 5. It's well worth a try and is less than a tenner!

2 of my dc have glue ear. My 10 year old has grommets and my 8 year old has hearing aids now after having 2 sets of grommets.

My DD had glue ear at about that age. It came and went a few times (generally came back in winter) and then went for good, before school age.

She did have other ENT issues though and ended up having tonsils and adenoids out at age 5 or 6. Not sure if that was related or not.

My DD had glue ear and repeated ear infections and burst ear drums from 6 months old. Audiology were really shocked her hearing wasn't affected as they registered it as quite severe with whatever tests they did.
I took her to a cranial osteopath and she's never had an ear infection since. No glue ear, no hearing issues. I had to go quite a few times but the osteopath gave me lots of free appointments, as part of a charity thing. I've no idea how it works or what they do but it's either an absolutely massive coincidence that it all suddenly went away or it works somehow!

Oh actually I did DD to a cranial osteopath. No idea if it did anything or if the glue ear went away by itself. But she didn’t have any other treatment.

Ds had glue ear. He started when he was only about 10 weeks old with infection after infection and had grommets in at 20 months, 3yo and 6yo and was finally signed off at 12yo.

I tried all sorts of things but nothing worked to clear it other than grommets.

Thanks everyone - it’s so scary and confusing with the symptoms seeming quite close to ASD ones.

2 dc both constant glue ear from 1yr plus. Both had 2 sets of bi lateral grommets then went on to have adenoids out ( 1dc had tonsils out too)
Nothing cleared it till then

@BG1989

I was always told with ds that often behaviour for glue ear and behaviour for ASD are very similar.
Ds was finally diagnosed with ASD aged 14yo after he'd grown out of the glue ear.

giraffesateleaves · 13/11/2021 21:35

My DS had it but only on one side, but again passed the hearing tests. However the test only required hearing in one ear to pass. The machine that tested the eardrums was always broken. so In my opinion he couldn't heat out of one ear. The glue ear side. He had a speech delay. He is very shy and certainly some ASD signs, which I think come from antisocial habits from not being able to hear from one side and in so being his own world. Also had tonsils and adenoids out age 3.5 due to congestion and excessive dribbling. Had to really push for this. Helped massively, 90% reduction in the dribbling.

I was told these days grommets not routinely offered, but I suppose depends. I imagine they will watch and wait.
