Baby grunting

DS is 1 week old, he sleeps absolutely fine during the day in his bouncer. As soon as he's in his Moses basket he is grunting ALL night.

I've tried burping him for what feels like hours on end, I've placed books underneath his mattress so he's propped up a little.

Has anyone else had this problem? Is it something I need to call the doctor about?

Hi! After endless searching online a few weeks ago I discovered that apparently newborns are very very noisy at night and it's normal as long as he/she doesn't appear to be struggling to breath. Pulling in at chest or under ribs or rapid breathing that doesn't settle. I was worried at first too!

We have had this issue too, it improved around 8 weeks and now at 10 weeks the grunting is only occasional. We tried infacol/ coleif/ anti- reflux formula in case it was digestive discomfort but nothing has helped except time - health visitor said it may be infant dyschezia, may be worth a google. If you feel worried or he seems to be in distress related to his breathing It cant hurt to ask the doctor? Or your health visitor if you have one. Good luck, I know how annoying it is to be awake wondering why they are making those farmyard sounds!!

Am awake having just googled this. Strangely with mine she almost always stops when we bring her into our bed.almost immediately stops. In her cot at night she grunts and flails about but not in the day. Hope we get answers soon and hope is changes for the better

I asked this very same question a few months ago OP! Even showed my GP a video at our postnatal check. Our DS would sleep through his straining but it kept us awake, he grew out of it around 3 months. GP said it wasn't grunting (which can be respiratory issues) but more straining where he was getting used to his digestive system.

Could be floppy larynx. Dd was also a noisy feeder, it peaked at around 6 weeks, it was affecting her sleep it was so bad. Just keep an eye if it gets worse.

Thanks for your responses!

Yeah it's definitely 'straining' rather than grunting. And he always stops when brought in for a cuddle or to sleep in our bed! Strange!
He seems alright just makes these noises that keep me awake haha but along as he's alright! I remember my DD doing something similar but you just worry don't you?

My first baby did this all the time. People used to stare at us when we were out and about because he was so loud! Tried Infacol and gaviscon which helped slightly but he eventually just settled around 12 weeks or so.

Would recommend playing white noise at night, might help baby settle and will at least drown out some of the noise for you!
