Hi mum's... Just wanted to see if anyone had any experience with undescended testis. My son who is 13 plucked up the courage to tell me last night that he only had one testicle and he thinks the other is stuck in his groin. Apparently he's known for years but thought it was normal and was embarrassed to say anything. That broke my heart. Anyway.. Been to the docs this morning and they have done an emergency refferal for him for this Friday. The speed is worrying me as its making me think its something to worry about. Even though I've been told it isn't. They doc said they will operate on him. Very scared for the general anastethic. And just what this means for him in general. Any advice/reassurance appreciated.

Thanks

My two haven't had this but often it's said it can effect fertility but also in later life you can get him checked for his fertility. The fact he had one means it's good at least one could be healthy. It will be sore post op plenty of pain relief for him. The surgery is pretty safe but ideally is done the younger the better. What are your concerns.

Bless him it is hard for all boys to speak about it. Don't blame yourself

My son was operated on for an undescended/missing testicle just before his second birthday.

We were given three outcomes:

  1. They would find the ‘missing testicle’ and bring it down into the scrotum.

  2. They would locate the missing testicle but it would be too damaged and so they’d have to remove it.

  3. They wouldn’t be able to find it.

Has your son had a ultrasound scan to see if they can see exactly where the testicle is?

I would be prepared for the possibility that even if they can get to it, it may need to be removed as if it has been inside his body as opposed to his scrotum its a possibility that it won’t have developed correctly so may not be functional anymore.

With my son, they found his undescended testicle but it was too damaged so it had to be removed - I was so upset. He’s almost seven now and he’s aware that he only has one testicle but I do worry for him when the teenage years approach.
