Night sweats in 10 year old

Will contact doctor on Monday but worried as we're going into lockdown that they won't want to see him.

He's a poor sleeper, always has been. Anxious, too. Couldn't sleep one night last week and when I checked on him his bedclothes were soaked through. No fever.

He's been clammy most nights since then (he usually wakes up around midnight wanting to get into our bed), and tonight woke up with massive sweat patches again.

I've looked up diabetes but he doesn't seem to have excessive thirst/fatigue/urination etc.

He is however very slim, has never put much weight on since he was a baby. Like I say he's a poor sleeper but never claims to be tired. No other symptoms at the moment. In previous years he's had mysterious tummy pains that have come and gone. One year he was quite ill at Christmas and they discovered he did have high ketones but his blood sugars were fine. That was two years ago.

I will ask the doctor about diabetes specifically anyway, but could it be anything else?

He does like to wrap himself up very warm (even if he only wears a t-shirt) and surround himself with teddies. But I don't like the fact it's been a week of it now. My husband wondered if it could be hormones but I'm not sure.

My first thought is hyperthyroidism. The poor sleeping, anxiety, night sweats, being very slim and wanting extra warmth are tip offs to me.

That's an interesting one - I don't think he matches a lot of the other symptoms but will keep in mind. He's fine with bowel movements (super regular), can focus, not tired in the day, slim but always has been, not warm/moist to touch in day.

I guess he could just have a virus or be too warm! Might let him sleep in my bed tonight and insist he doesn't wrap himself up and see what happens.

I did read about Hodgkins last night and checked his lymph glands this morning (some of them, don't really know what I'm looking for) but he seems pretty healthy in the day.

The anxiety is just how he's always been, he gets worried about change and things like getting to sleep. I think (not that this is better!) that it's his usual mental standard rather than a new thing. Although if it was related to a physical illness that might mean it was treatable which would be a good thing!

Vitamin d deficiency can cause sweating, usually of head, but worth looking into.

Hello @InescapableDeath just wondering if you got any response from your GP about this? My 7yo is soaking his bed and pjs at night though sweating.

InaccurateDream · 08/01/2022 19:58

Hi there @AllKnowingGerbil I named changed since then but am OP.

We actually discovered he had been pulling the duvet over his head to sleep and that was probably the cause. It took a long time to get him to feel comfortable going to sleep without doing it. His sleep didn’t actually improve until we moved house in 2021 and he had a new bedroom and I got him a comfy eye mask thing that also goes over the ears, so gives that feeling without covering up all avenues of heat loss!

All that being said, if there is no obvious physical reason like my son had, I would go to the Gp.

AllKnowingGerbil · 08/01/2022 21:53

Thanks @InaccurateDream! That's good news. My DS does sleep with loads of cuddlies so it could be that. I'll sneak up and remove them tonight and see if that stops the sweating. If not will have a word with GP

Hi @AllKnowingGerbil just wondering if you had any answers or any advice as my son is 6 1/2 and exactly the same - last two nights especially i had to flip his duvet over as was soaked. He’s always been sweaty but after googling am panicking xxx

GC12345 · 14/10/2025 10:14

My son is 10 and I have noticed over the last week he is soaked in sweat about twenty mins after going to sleep. He’s got the duvet wrapped tight around his chin and when I try and waft him he gets cross. His room is not hot. Should I take him to doctors. I think my other son used to get sweaty too. Could it be hormones

GC12345 · 14/10/2025 10:15

I’m panicking now too 😩
