Baby with a temperature now vomiting

DS is 9months and has a temp since Monday, we got him COVID tested yesterday morning and are now self isolating until we get the result. However last night he started vomiting and seems to be getting worse, he actually ate some food for the first time in about 24h and then we gave him nurofen which he vomited. Didn't want a bedtime feed, woke at 1ish and had a small feed and again at 4.30. After I fed him then he vomited a lot. Has managed to keep some water down but is very sleepy and just wants to be held. I don't know wether to ride it out for today and hope we get a negative result later which will make it easier to get him seen, or take him to the dr (if they will even see him at our surgery). Potentially has an ear or throat infection as he's swallowing lots. Does anyone have any experience of what will happen? Are there special 'COVID doctors surgeries'. Obviously I doubt he has it but can't be sure. Thought he'd be better and not worse today Confused

I think you should be seen, he’s very small and if you’re worried it’s always better to see the doctor. Phone the surgery and see what they say. If GP won’t see you there will be an area of A&E for COVID patients

Ginfordinner · 28/10/2020 07:34

It could be an ear infection, or a urine infection. He needs to be seen.

mooity · 28/10/2020 07:39

A negative Covid swab will not mean much other than you don’t have to self isolate. All fevers are treated in the ?covid areas incase it’s a false negative. So don’t let that delay you seeing medical help if you think he needs it.

Either try GP or local A&E department. I work in A&E and would fully understand you bringing in a baby in these circumstances but I would still treat you in the ‘Red’ area despite a negative Covid swab.

Call 111, don't wait

DonnatellaLyman · 28/10/2020 07:43

He sounds unwell and you are worried so he needs to be seen. There was huge concern in the first wave that children weren’t being brought to see doctors when they needed to be because of covid. Your GP or local A&e will have procedures in place to deal with feverish children so please get your little one checked out. Hope he gets better soon.

Cantchooseaname · 28/10/2020 07:46

Yep, 111 and ask to be seen.
He’s to small to wait, and ear/ urine/ throat stuff can get worse (and better) quickly. There are systems well established for this scenario- don’t suffer, get the right medicine and be on road to feeling better soon.
As an aside, my daughter always barfs neurofen. It just doesn’t agree with her.
Hope you all better and out of isolation soon.

cosmo30 · 28/10/2020 07:46

Definately needs to be seen, he's very young and it's been specifically said before by health professionals people in need should not hesitate to go in. Call 111

PinkDaffodil2 · 28/10/2020 07:47

Please don’t wait for the test result if you think he needs seeing - call your GP as they all have different set ups for ‘hot’ patients. As he has a fever he will be managed as possible Covid regardless of test result as there are so many false negatives but they will still see him - but may not be at the usual GP surgery.

Thanks for all your replies. I will phone the drs in 30mins when they open and go from there. He's eaten a few dry Cheerios and kept water down so that's good!

Dr called back. Told me it's very unlikely to be Covid, sounds like a virus, keep feeding and giving fluids and see how he does. So pretty unhelpful tbh but there we go. Confused

Aw bless him, Is he having wet nappies ?

ThatBitch · 28/10/2020 11:45

My dd does not tolerate ibuprofen based medicine at all, it always makes him vomit. He's also prone to high temperatures. We make sure to give him calpol at regular doses. One thing that has helped in the past is syringing 5 mls of apple juice every 10-15 mins into his mouth as it helps his blood sugar and rehydrates him.

saywhatwhatnow · 28/10/2020 12:05

Luckily (for us...potentially less lucky for him) we've got some paracetamol suppositories as my older DS has never been able to keep calpol or nurofen down either when he's poorly. So I'm keeping him dosed up for now. He's asleep AGAIN but has kept a feed down, and I'll offer him some toast or something when he gets up. Apple juice diluted is a good idea! Thanks. I'm always so anxious when they get poorly.
