Foot pain in arch DD 11

Stressingismyhobby · 23/10/2020 18:41

It's happened a few times before then quickly gone away. But she's complained of it a lot the past few days. It seems to hurt if she's been walking or running a lot. The pain runs along the side of her arch. She doesn't feel it when she's just standing but it particularly hurts when she walks upstairs.

Any ideas?

Does she have particularly high or low arches? If so it may help to buy appropriate arch supports to put in her shoes for when she’s walking and running.

Aquamarine1029 · 23/10/2020 21:32

It sounds like the arches of her shoes aren't right for her feet.

samuraimyths · 23/10/2020 21:40

Op are you sure it is her arch that hurts not her heels and then she overcompensates? Severs disease is very common at this age - google it. To do with heels and growth plates.

Kanaloa · 23/10/2020 21:55

Is she wearing good, supportive shoes? If she's walking or running a lot in flimsy shoes maybe her feet are strained.

Stressingismyhobby · 23/10/2020 22:10

She's in Clark's school shoes most of the time - I'm assuming they'd be supportive? It's only one foot and it's definitely the arch, not the heel.

Should've stressed - it's just one foot.

When she stands in bare feet are her arches the same or is the sore one lower ?
Have you tried an arch support in her shoe ?
Don’t let her wear any completely flat shoes like ballet slipper style, Vans, Converse.
Good supportive trainers are ideal.

Stressingismyhobby · 24/10/2020 07:41

She's not with me at the moment to check. I did notice that the nobbly bone at the side of her foot is quite prominent (sorry don't know what it's called!) and she said it hurt when I touched it. Think it's quite prominent on other foot too though?

Sounds like plantarfascitis to me.
I used to have it.
You can get shoe inserts that help.
Like a pp said supportive, not totally flat shoes are a must.

ElizabethMainwaring · 24/10/2020 07:52

Plantar fascitis. Sorry, it's two words.

Stressingismyhobby · 24/10/2020 08:12

Thank you. Just googled. Does sound like it could be that although it says pain is often in the heel - hers is mostly at the side, along the arch- does that sound about right?

Hello again.
Yes, a sharp pain along the inner arch.
It felt like a string (possibly a tendon) being stretched too much and about to snap.
The first symptom I had was a sudden. incredibly sharp pain on the inner sole of my foot.
I was on play ground duty and wearing Converse; I thought that I had trod on a drawing pin. I took my shoe of to check!
I hope that your daughter gets rid of it soon. Mine just seemed to go away on its own.

FippertyGibbett · 24/10/2020 08:40

My plantar fasciitis was only ever in my heel, and it was incredibly painful.

Stressingismyhobby · 24/10/2020 08:42

Thank you both. Trip to the drs, it is.

Bump on side of foot was accessory navicular for my daughter.

Stressingismyhobby · 24/10/2020 17:25

Hi @mysticpistachio I just looked that up quickly. What happened with your DD? Was it an extra bump on the foot or was it that the nobbly bone was bigger than it should be? She says the pain is in the nobbly bone and runs along the side of her arch. Definitely no heel pain.

I must be honest, I have health anxiety and will totally catastrophise about it until we get to see a Dr so any more words of advice or experience are much appreciated!

If the nobbly bone is the navicular then she might have injured her posterior tibial tendon, which inserts on the navicular and also along the arch.

Get her to stand facing away from you and watch her heels as she lifts onto tiptoes. Right at the top of the movement, her heels should turn in towards each other. If the injured one doesn’t, or it hurts only when she’s as high on her tiptoes as she can go, then it’s likely the posterior tibial tendon.

LadyButton · 24/10/2020 17:40

Or possibly a navicular stress fracture?

What Are the Symptoms of a Navicular Stress Fracture?
Your child will have vague, aching pain along the inner side of the foot near the arch. It may come on slowly over time and get worse during and following physical activity. Sprinting, jumping and pushing-off are movements that aggravate the pain. It often occurs after a change in intensity or duration of physical activity or a change in shoe wear or running technique.

Stressingismyhobby · 24/10/2020 17:57

Thank you so much. It does sound like it could be something to do with the navicular rather than plantar fasciitis. I have spoken to 111 and am expecting a call back.

Stressingismyhobby · 31/10/2020 23:53

Just to update- 111 sent us to urgent care, who basically told me off for taking her there for something non-urgent 😳 Told me to give pain relief and see GP if it continues. It has continued (on and off). Went out all day the other day and it was fine while we were out but then sore in the evening. Definitely the navicular bone that is sore (if that's the right term for it) - it's slightly sore to touch sometimes too - and sometimes the pain is along the side of the arch too. Hoping we can see a GP before lockdown...
