8 month old has v high temp and we're due to go on holiday tomorrow

Help, what should I do?
We booked a last minute holiday to go to Crete for a week from Saturday, 2 adults and our 8 month old baby girl.
But this evening our 8 month old has got a very high temperature 39.8. I have given Calpol and Nurofen alternating for the last 12 hours but it keeps creeping back up.
I'm pretty certain it's not covid, I think it's most likely teething related as she's been showing a lot of teething signs lately.
What should I do? We have 24 hours until we go on holiday? This would have been our first with our daughter.
Do we still go and hope it will pass quickly? Or cancel?
I could try and get some antibiotics from my GP last min today and still go?
What is the healthcare like in Crete, if we were to need it?
Would insurance pay out if we were to cancel? I booked flights, accom, and transfers all separate?😕

I doubt teething would cause a temp of nearly 40! You need to get her tested for covid as per guidelines. If that comes back negative I would get her seen ASAP by the GP or OOH service. I wouldn’t travel with a sick baby at all, but you can’t anyway - it could be Covid couldn’t it. I suppose you’ll have to contact your insurance to see where you stand.

Also, if it is a virus then antibiotics are no use.

Teething doesn't cause that type of temp, that's a fever and guidelines for over 39 under 12 months are to phone 111 or go to GP especially if it's not resolving after 12 hours with paracetamol.

You need a Covid test. I don't think you should be travelling without resolving the cause, I wouldn't want to be in a foreign hospital with a sick baby right now (or any time but particularly now)

If insurance discovered you travelled with symptoms, they won't cover you.

I think lots of airports are temperature testing on arrival.

You all need to isolate until she has a negative covid test. 39.8 is very high, covid or not, she probably shouldn't be going anywhere. It doesn't sound like teething.

Check the bottles but she can have Calpol 6 hourly and Nurofen 8 hourly as a maximum I think.

I don't think you should be going anywhere I'm afraid. Could you call first thing to try and change the dates?

Teething causing a fever is a huge myth.

You should call 111 now and get advice, that’s a very high temp for a small baby.

There's no way i would consider the holiday OP. It's not even the Covid, but the thought of being abroad with a teeny poorly baby is unsettling. You just need to get your baby checked out at stay at home x

Ah OP that is gutting but I think you know you can’t go on holiday. Really sorry, you will be so disappointed I hope your baby gets well soon.

I’m going to go against the grain and tell you to wait a bit longer before deciding. The fever could be caused by absolutely anything and probably not covid! I assume she is crawling around the floor and picking things up? That’s when they start to come into contact with many more bugs and viruses. However, it sounds like her immune system has kicked in straight away and she may well deal with it fairly quickly and be fine by Saturday. In my experience, babies and young children quite often only need 24hrs to deal with a standard bug and then they’re absolutely fine again.

That’s is an extremely high temperature for a child. Check your thermometer. If it’s still high you need to be ringing 111. I’m afraid it’s not looking hopeful for your holiday.

Covid or not I personally would feel uncomfortable taking an unwell child abroad especially if it is to somewhere I don’t know very well or don’t speak the language. I feel for you, such shit timing and a hard decision.

I bet her temperature comes down as quickly as it went up.

Antibiotics won't do anything if she's just fighting a virus. You say you don't think it's Covid, but she's got a virus from somewhere so it cant be ruled out. I wouldn't test a baby, I'd just self isolate.

You took a risk booking a holiday right now, you'll need to read the small print to see what you're covered for.

Do you have travel insurance?

I work at a nursery - any child that has a temperature can’t return until they Have a negative Covid tests

Regardless of covid that’s a high temperature and probably not a good idea to travel. So disappointing for you. Hope she feels better soon.

You need to focus on your poorly baby. That's a very high temperature.

Do you want to be faced with a sick child on holiday? needing to find a doctor or hospital abroad is traumatic at the best of times.

Happened to me a good few years ago now.
The day before flying my dd came down with a temperature but had just had her jabs so we knew what it was from.

The worst holiday ever. Spent the whole time with fans propping up around the cot in a hot country trying to keep a poorly baby cool and happy was the hardest thing ever.

By day 4 she was bak to normal but then we had a nasty storm for the last two days and didn't even make it to the beach

I wish we had cancelled and claimed on insurance now and it put me off going abroad with young kids right up until this year when we had a big holiday booked that got cancelled due to Covid

Absolutely no way you should be travelling with a poorly baby, covid or not. Also airports are doing temperature checks so you'd probably be turned away anyway.

Teething can cause a slight rise in temp that isn’t a slight rise

You need first off a test (sadly) then to look after you baby who isn’t well. Taking her away in non COVID times would be problematic

Crete are incredibly strict and will check you can’t go

And in any case, no way would I take a child whose temperature had been that high on a holiday immediately afterwards. The thought of trying to negotiate pharmacies, doctors and worst case, a hospital in Greek - no way.

Don’t go - get tested. Please follow the rules for everyone elses sake and for your babies sake keep her home and comfortable And speak to a GP if it persists . Poor kid :(

Surely when you booked this you knew it was a risk? Id not be travelling with an 8 month old at the moment anyway.

Thing is, the temperature will go down this morning and spike in the night so don't think it's gone because of a daytime improvement.

That is a high temperature and regardless of the cause she is going to feel rotten. Please dont drag her on a plane its not fair

COVID or not you need medical advice. The temp will not be teething related she could have any kind of infection or virus causing it. The dr won't dish out antibiotics for a baby for an unknown reason.

I think you know what you need to do unfortunately. Book a test, self isolate, ring the GP if temp hasn’t gone down yet, ring insurance company, accept that it looks like you’re not going on holiday unfortunately.

Just to go against the grain, teething can cause such high temps, my DD would regularly hit 40 just before a tooth popper through. I wouldn't want to travel with a sick baby though as that's no fun, so would probably try to rearrange - your insurance should cover it if you can't. I probably wouldn't get a covid test for a baby, there are a thousand other things more likely to cause a temp.
