Do I treat for thrush?

So, GP has prescribed oral thrush treatment for DS, who was born last week. However, I'm not sure whether to give it because:
-GP never saw DS and prescribed on the basis of a phone conversation. The NHS website seems to suggest a swab should be taken.

  • I said to the doctor that my nipples weren't damaged but on closer inspection there is a small cut on each.
  • It's unlicensed for neonates.

However, it could well be thrush because:

  • My nipples feel burny all the time, but are agony when feeding. I can feel the burn now, despite having had both paracetamol and ibuprofen half an hour ago.
  • DS had antibiotics for 48 hours after birth
  • DS has started clicking when he is feeding, which he didn't before
  • DS has a white coating in the middle of his tongue

Would you give the treatment or not?

Possibly relevant: It doesn't hurt as much when my toddler feeds.

My DS had oral thrush when he was a baby, the gp didn’t take a swab just looked in his mouth and saw the white coating and gave us the medicine. It helped my DS. It’s so difficult to know what to do these days with limited gp contact. Personally I’d give him the treatment, could you take him to see a pharmacist just for them to look in his mouth and confirm? Not sure if even that is possible atm 😬

I would treat it as it will get more and more painful for you otherwise. You can ask for a swab in parallel to check for other infections. I had both thrush and a bacterial infection with DS3. It was excruciating. The stuff we used was nystatin for the baby not the daktarin stuff which is for 4m plus.
