Evening! If anyone has past experiences with montelukast can you tell me how long it takes to reach it's full effect? In all honesty I didnt want my daughter on this drug so if its not working then I'd like her off it asap.
This is no judgement on others just personal preference. Thank you

Give it a month. If no noticeable effect then take her off it. It can be a wonder drug for some children, so don't rule it out!

Justwingingmotherhood · 12/10/2020 19:00

@filthyanimal oh 100% I heard it can be a real game changer! I'm more then willing to give it a go, she took her first dose earlier tonight. Thanks for the advice x

Both of mine took it, for DD it was a wonder drug, DS might as well've been taking a sugar tablet. I agree, give it a month then review the situation.

WooMaWang · 12/10/2020 19:19

DS2 tried montelukast for about 3 months. It helped a bit but wasn’t helping enough. He was changed to a combination inhaler (simbicort) instead and that’s made an enormous difference.

It’s worth trying for a few weeks.

Frlrlrubert · 12/10/2020 19:29

I'm an adult but it took about two weeks to have an effect. I'd give it a month like a pp said.

Justwingingmotherhood · 12/10/2020 19:34

Thanks all xx

I'm taking it along with a combination inhaler. It's not been long but it seems to be making a difference. My doctor wants to talk to me about it after 4 weeks.

Justwingingmotherhood · 12/10/2020 19:57

@kimlo good luck chick

@Justwingingmotherhood thanks, my peak flows holding steady, so fingers crossed this combination works.

suzuki650 · 13/10/2020 19:03

It literally starting working after a few days for my son, he's had no problems on it. He takes that & brown inhaler twice a day & has gone from needing a reliever 4-5 times a day before montelukast to needing it 3 times this year. Total game changer for us but I know it doesn't work for everyone

Justwingingmotherhood · 13/10/2020 19:53

@suzuki650 shes on her second day. I have noticed a slight reduction.

misslml · 16/10/2020 22:42

My son has been on it for 3 years now and he’s improved a lot I never miss a day out

suzuki650 · 17/10/2020 08:42

Ah that's promising, how's it going now? Honestly was a total game changer for us- touching wood now but we've been admitted to hospital since he started on it.

Justwingingmotherhood · 17/10/2020 11:50

@suzuki650 her cough is now worse then ever. Currently sitting at the table utterly baffled and defeated.

@Justwingingmotherhood I've now got a chest infection, I'm on antibiotocs and steroids.

Disheartening isn't it?

I would ring 111 and ask to speak to out of hours.

myshoelaces · 17/10/2020 13:01

I think seretide has been more effective for my son. It also caused depression.

myshoelaces · 17/10/2020 13:02

Is she on an inhaler too?

blindmansbluff · 17/10/2020 13:34

Didn't work for my DD, they changed her to the brown inhaler instead and it was much better. Also made her behaviour decline rapidly.

confusednortherner · 17/10/2020 14:29

Double edged sword here, made ds's asthma better but send him bonkers! School couldn't believe the difference when we stopped it again.

Isawthathaggis · 22/10/2020 00:17

After two weeks my two year old started having quite vivid and unpleasant dreams. Not that a two year old can explain a lot, but what she could manage wasn’t good.
I stopped giving it immediately.

In the end it turned out she had a bacterial infection, so it was the wrong drug entirely.

Hope it gets better for you OP.
