Hair loss and lethargy

Hi,
My toddler is 2.5, he has always had little problems since birth here and there. No set diagnosis but he’s always been a worry.
The last few months he started to get a bald patch on his head, off we went to the gp where they tried a fungal cream, it didn’t work so he has been referred to dermatology but this will probably take months. The hair loss has been slowly progressing but lately I’d say it’s becoming pretty bad, his hair is thin all over. The last week he seems really tired, sleeping 3 hours for a nap and 13 hours at night time, I have been wakening him in the morning. He just doesn’t seem himself.. but doesn’t have anything like a temperature or sickness that I could report back about to the gp.

His speech isn’t great either we were re assessed by the hv recently who I expected to recommend us to speech and language (which she did) but she also raised concerns this could all be linked and has also referred to a paediatric team (again this will take months).
Im wondering if anyone has experienced similar and what you would do...? Help!!

Is he anaemia?

I’m not sure @paradyning, hopefully the hospital will do bloods so I can find out.

Thyroid ?

Jomum2020 · 18/10/2020 15:14

@FippertyGibbett that’s what I’m suspicious of as they discovered my thyroid levels were all over the place whilst I was pregnant.
Do you hve any experience with thyroid problems in children?

No, sorry. But I would be pushing for blood tests to rule anything like that out.

Jomum2020 · 18/10/2020 15:43

Yeah that’s my plan, the gp said they can’t do them and the hospital will but who knows how long I’ll be waiting due to covid. His hAir keeps getting worse.

There was a country wide problem with blood tests over the last couple of weeks. Something to do with Roche.

Could that be why he said no? Not the fact that he doesn’t want to just the fact that there was an nhs processing issue? So if it’s resolved now you could get them done? Worth asking him if he didn’t give a reason for his refusal last week?

I think I would be wanting bloods urgently done and if any length of time to wait for a specialist perhaps get bloods at least done privately? I don’t know how much it would right enough but I’d enquire.

I don’t like the fact that he’s so lethargic. Something is clearly not right. Why is the GP not bothering his arse.

I'd get back to the GP and emphasise the long term lethargy and hair thinning , be insistent about a blood test and be specific about having his thyroid checked. DS had a blood test last week and the results were sent to the GP the same day.
