so my dd is 3.5 years old, she has a CONSTANT cough which gets worse when shes back at nursery. Inhalers dont work for her so shes been prescribed montelukast, 2 weeks agoand I'm yet to try them because quite frankly I'm to scared after hearing all the horror stories. Shes going for some allergy testing tomorrow so I'll also speak with them also but can anybody share some success stories with this drug? I'm at my wits end

Two DC who have their asthma under control here.

Stop reading internet rubbish and do what your child needs to get her asthma under control.

@Standstilling quite aware of what I need to do. But I havent just read it on the internet. These are personal experiences of people I know. But good to know of a success story.

What horror stories? Montelukast is really well tolerated and rarely causes problems. Try it for a month or two and see if it helps. If it doesn't then it will be stopped and her treatment stepped up a different way. Asthma is a chronic and potentially dangerous condition but luckily there are excellent treatments and well recognised management pathways to follow . I would say that the disease is scary but in most cases, unless she is on very heavy duty steroids long term, the treatments are not. She is old enough now to reason with over her puffers and taking medicines which helps and she will get into the swing of it. Please keep going back to your asthma nurse until she is controlled .

@yikesanotherbooboo montelukast can cause depression, night terrors and behavioural problems to name a few. She has an appointment with paediatric respiratory next week so I may wait and see what they say. Dont get me wrong I'm not leaving my child to suffer. She isnt gasping desperately for breathe. She had a constant dry cough worse on some days and better on others. I'm on the phone weekly with the doctor as the asthma nurse impossible to get a hold of.

Sorry, yes , I understand that that can happen but it isn't the case for most DC. Without trying you won't know and if it doesn't suit it can be stopped. For many it is a trouble free game changer .

@yikesanotherbooboo I'm going to bite the bullet and try it. I'm very guilty of diving into Google for answers. Thanks for the shove I needed!

Montelukast is not without side effects and some are pretty scary but the side effects of poorly controlled asthma are scary too. I have two kids who are now adults, they were some of the first children to take Montelukast, for DD it worked and for DS it had no effect. DD did start having migraines around the same time she started on Montelukast but I will never know if she developed the headaches because of Montelukast or if she would've had them anyway as I also suffer from them. DD also has restricted growth which has been linked into her poorly controlled asthma and high use of oral steroids as a child. Her asthma has such an impact on her life when it is out of control that she accepts the occasional headache in exchange for having better control over her asthma.

Montelukast - Looking for peoples experience with this? My son has been prescribed it age 3 and I’m nervous about it if being completely honest! All advice and personal experience welcome please 🙏🏼

My daughter has been on it fir ten years. Has made a huge difference to her asthma

PragmaticWench · 21/06/2021 22:52

It's been a huge game changer for DD, she's like a different child now the night time cough has gone.

Not a dc experience but when I started on it I felt like I had grown an extra lung. If you can give that gift to your dc it would be amazing. You can always stop it if they experience negative side effects.
