What is this in DC’s ear?

Any ideas? It has been there for 1+ years. Originally it looked like two small dots, took him the the chemist and she said it looked like blackheads and to leave them, they would resolve on their own.
Recently it has got much bigger, and I’m getting worried.
Anyone got any ideas what it is/how we can help?

Looks like blackheads to me. Hard to say. Have you a black head remover?

RiaOverTheRainbow · 01/10/2020 15:53

They probably are just blackheads, but go to the GP if you're worried.

I have one of the hook things but he is only little (4) and as such his ears are too little and soft to apply adequate pressure.

I can’t quite see as the photo is blurry but maybe a preauricular sinus?

picklemewalnuts · 01/10/2020 16:03

If it were me, I'd let them get all soft after a long bath. Then while he's watching tv tell him I'm fishing in his ears and he needs to be still. I'd use the curve end of a hair grip, or two cotton buds, and gently press and pull. Don't try and get them totally empty- just take out a bit on a regular basis so they don't get bigger.

But that's me.

I wouldn’t stick anything in a 4 year olds ear, they are too young to understand that they need to stay still and one slip and you could easily damage his hearing for life.

I’d probably speak to a dr about it. 4 year olds don’t get blackheads generally.

Bunnybigears · 01/10/2020 16:07

Looks like blackheads to me, I would have to have a squeeze but I'm a sporner, might be best to just leave them alone.

IHateCoronavirus · 01/10/2020 16:13

I’ve tried calling GP. I’ve been told to try and ring again in the morning to see if I can get an appointment.

I'd say blackheads, dd got them at a young age in her ears
Use a blackhead tool or a hair Kirby, they may squish easily

IHateCoronavirus · 01/10/2020 16:37

Ooh I got something!
I used the blackhead tool, and had a poke while he watched the iPad happily. It popped out with next to no pressure. He still has two tiny holes but they look more consistent with what was always there.
Thanks for the advice.

That’s gross but so satisfying! Love a happy ending!!

It will be a regular task, as they'll fill up. Empty it regularly so they don't grow, I'd say.

I’ll keep a close eye on them. I think it was so enlarged it came out without any bother but I don’t want it to get so large again. I also don’t want to hurt his little ears. I might experiment with different soap to see if it dries them out a bit.
