Nappy thrush made worse by Canesten

VERY grateful for any experiences with nappy thrush and Canesten...

Four week old DS has had a spotty rash for 10 days or so. After speaking to HV, who agreed that it sounded like thrush, we saw a GP a few days ago. She prescribed Canesten (twice a day) but it’s made it so much worse; it has now spread wider on his poor little bottom and looks much angrier. We were using Bepanthen before we realised it was thrush and while it wasn’t clearing, it wasn’t getting worse so I’m surprised it’s now flared up so much. We’ve still been using this between the applications of Canesten (as left his bum without it for a few hours at first and it then looked very raw).

Is this to be expected? I’ve read that it can get worse before it gets better. We’re also doing all the recommended things - changing nappy very frequently, keeping as dry as possible, nappy free time etc.

When my eldest had this at a similar age we were advised to put a layer of sudacream over the top of the canistan as a protection layer so that the thrush cream didn't come off as quickly. As I remember it got a little worse before getting better but not majorly. I also stopped using wet wipes with her and went back to just cotton wool and cooled boiled water.

Put a thick layer of hydromol over the top of the thrush cream. My daughter had this and we needed a totally waterproof layer on her skin to allow it to heal.
We were told not to use sudocrem as it can take the skin off.

Thank you so much both - I had been thinking that the thrush cream was probably coming off very quickly with nappy changes. The dr has advised is to give it the weekend to see if it gets any better. If not they’ll reassess and I’ll be sure to mention this.
