Think son is ill not sure what to do

My son is 3 (4 in Jan)

He seemed a bit off this evening but nothing I could put my finger on.

He woke up a few hours ago really distressed, managed to calm him back to sleep.

He woke again 30 mins ago or so really distressed. He has a slightly raised temperature and isn't settling. He's calm and not crying but isn't really going back to sleep. He still feels warm to the touch.

He was saying that it didn't hurt anymore but is having slight cries like he is in pain.

He is also saying some odd things like 'yeah, I'll do the oven' and 'I'll get up in a minute'

I'm sat by his bed wide awake watching him ... what do I do?

It could easily be a mild virus, or the start of a cold, or a night terror.

The only bits that sound alarming are the nonsense-things he's saying (is he delirious, or just half-asleep? It's so hard to tell) and your instinct that there's something wrong.

minipie · 27/09/2020 00:07

I would give Calpol in that scenario and see if it helps. Do you still have a monitor anywhere so you can get to bed but hear him if he’s crying?

Twizbe · 27/09/2020 00:10

We have a monitor on him and we're staying at my parents so are in the room next door.

I think they have some calpol here so will give that if he wakes again.

He seems to have gone to sleep now but my gut is telling me something is up. I don't know whether to try and get some more sleep or stay next to him

Have you taken his temperature?

Twizbe · 27/09/2020 00:13

@Straysocks

Have you taken his temperature?
Yeah and it was a little warm for him but not quite fever territory.

Surely you put him in the big bed with you and yr DH sleeps in the boys bed.

DH is 6'7 .... with the best will in the world he won't fit in a toddler bed.

I think I'm going to find a blanket and bed down in here

IF it was one of mine I would give a dose of Calpol and bring them into bed with me and lie with him, that way you can both rest but you are right there if needed. What was his temp when you out too took?

Straysocks · 27/09/2020 00:29

Calpol & bedding down next to him sounds like a good plan. Wishing you both a peaceful night.

alexdgr8 · 27/09/2020 00:34

what has the urine output been. is it down.
you could ring 111.
i would.

PennyCrayon85 · 27/09/2020 00:35

Sounds like a night terror type thing. My three year old gets them. She talks in her sleep and cries and howls like she’s in agony. And then she settles back down and it’s like nothing happened 🤷🏻‍♀️ Horrible and distressing to witness but she doesn’t seem to be aware of them.

catsarecute · 27/09/2020 00:39

I agree with the others, Calpol and stay with him. Get the cushions off the sofa or something if you can't get him in bed with you. My DS is older but woke disorientated and in pain in the night earlier this week. Think he had a cramp but he was talking rubbish about cameras when we asked him where he was hurting. I think he was just confused because be had woken from a deep sleep. Slightly raised temp, not a fever though. He was ok the next day. Hope your little one is better in the morning.

Twizbe · 27/09/2020 00:42

Thanks all. He's just woken again saying he wanted mummy. He doesn't feel as warm as he did which is good.

Am trying to get comfy next to him

Update

He was up and down all night and I've got what sleep I can next to him.

He's lethargic this morning and hasn't really drunk his morning milk. It also looked like he might be sick a min ago.

We've cancelled all plans for today and will get him home as soon as we can

If he doesn't want to drink milk, make sure he gets sips of water etc. to keep him hydrated, especially if he is sick. Children can deteriorate pretty quick if they are dehydrated.

Straysocks · 27/09/2020 08:39

Sorry to hear he's no better. Seconding the suggestion of watching fluid intake, even spoon/syringes of water. Dehydration is a big thing when they're small. Hope someone is looking after you too.

Thesearmsofmine · 27/09/2020 09:12

Poor little thing. Make sure you have a lie down today while DH watches him so that you are rested if he is unsettled again tonight.

I hope he feels better soon x

Twizbe · 27/09/2020 16:51

Update

He started to perk up around mid morning and managed to eat and drink.

He's back to his old self now, but his little sister (19 months) has fallen ill.

We are back home so have rearranged beds already and I'll sleep in her room tonight and DH will sleep with son.

Last night my son had a particular smell around him and now my daughter has the same smell.

Great he has recovered, but so sorry your dd is ill now. Hope she gets well soon too, and take care.

Torvean32 · 05/10/2020 23:48

Can't think of much worse than being ill with a fever and being plonked in a bed inbetween 2 heat producing adults ,plus covers ( not saying you said this OP ).

Are they pulling on their ears?
