Receded gum in a child - picture attached

DD3 (11) has just shown me her gum at the front and it's really receded. Do I need to contact a dentist? What can we do about it?

Has she been referred to an orthodontist? I don't think its receded as such but has been pushed/stretched by the way the tooth is positioned

They were talking about referring 'at some point' before lockdown. I think they were going to wait until more of her adult teeth are in. The dentist thought there was potential for her teeth to straighten out a bit on their own, but I think they are seriously wonky, though.

My son aged 13 has just had his brace removed after around 20 months. Much like your dd his teeth were as you say wonky (his were much worse) his teeth are now perfect! Retainer for bed for at least a year now however please dont worry orthodontists are miracle workers. Met many much older teenagers in the waiting room also so dont worry about any delay due to covid either.

There's no room for them to straighten, she's pretty crowded. Give your practice a ring and ask if they're doing check ups yet. If you can get her seen sooner it's worthwhile as the orthodontic waiting times will go up. They'll refer once she's got most of her adult teeth.
As demented said the recession is due to the tooth position, when the tooth moves the gum will be fine.

That's great, thanks. We did have an appointment, but they've cancelled it and shifted us to December. I might give them a call and ask for her to be seen sooner, then.

Due to COVID and the NHS backlog, if you’re child requires orthodontic treatment, most waiting lists are now 2 years+ so I would ask your general dentist to refer sooner rather than later. They may even be longer than that. Or alternatively you could go down the private route with much shorter wait times x
