My little boy has been unwell the past few days . He was in a&e on Friday with a temperature of 40. Calpol did bring it down ans they told me he has a really bad throat infection, hence the temperature. They have given me antibiotics for him, they are penecillin/ amoxicillin. He is getting better i think , his temperature is staying at what it should be but he is very sleepy / needy . Sometimes he wants to play but then he just bursts into tears and wants cuddles. Is this normal? Should I he concerned ? Can the antibiotics make him sleepy? How long does it usually take to recover ? He is eating and drinking quite well , im just worried about the sleepiness/ being needy (not thst I'm complaining usual he never sits still to give me cuddles ) just looking for reassurance that this is normal as he has never really been ill before.

Thank you

Were you asked to take him to A&E? Or did you just show up with him with a temp of 40 degrees? Have you tested him for Covid as per government guidelines?

Yes it’s normal for little ones to want to sleep when they feel unwell.

I spoke with 111 as I was worried about him. They advised me to go a&e as his lips kept going slightly blue which was the main reason for going there . Currently waiting for covid test in the post today as well.

Could well be normal but no harm in getting him checked out again for your peace of mind. Hope he feels much better very soon.

One of my boys used to throw blue lips with a fever as a toddler, every time. The doctor told me some children are inclined to this. His oxygenation was always fine. He grew out if it by about age 4.

He's just poorly. Keep an eye if he becomes unrousable or anything but throat infections can make them feel rotten.

Ah op, I hear you. Dd2 was very unwell around the same age as your lo. I called the gp who advised to bring her in straight away. The gp called an ambulance upon assessment and I was beside myself. Turns out she had a double ear and throat infection (sounds minor but her stats were bad enough for the gp to be concerned). She was also prescribed antibiotics and it took a good 2 days for her to resemble anywhere normal. I barely slept in that time. She was clearly in a lot of pain, so unless your lo can’t take calpol for any reason I’d keep on top of pain relief as it’s very painful for little ones and keep a close eye on them (obviously don’t overdose them). It took at least a week for her to get over it (I still have flashbacks lol) but as pp say if you become concerned contact either 111 or your gp but for lo’s it’s very painful and that would explain the other problems. Hope they make a full recovery soon. She’s 4 now and thankfully her immune system has got stronger.
