Dreaded threadworms twice in 7 months!?

My 12 & 8 y.o. DDs have got threadworms. Everyone in the family has taken Ovex and I'm going crazy with the washing of sheets and towels and vacuuming at the moment. I was alarmed to think that one of them could have picked it up when I thought we were being very vigilant about handwashing. Then I realised the last time we went through this was in February of this year. Could one of them have possibly been reinfected from eggs in the house? 7 months seems too long for anything to have survived but I don't think that they have been back in school long enough to have picked it up there. I should point out that my 12 y.o. sucks her thumb, which is probably how she picks up all sorts of nasties. She's got ASD and I believe it's a stim for her, so getting her to stop is challenging. Although, she is conscious about doing it in front of other people, so she only does it t home. So, I'm just not sure how they keep getting worms?!

It's possible that they never really fully got rid of them in their bodies. Even if there's only a very small amount they could start multiplying again.

I wouldn't worry too much. My son had them twice in a similar time frame a few years ago. Thankfully hasn't had them since! My son also has autism.

Just keep with the hygiene but don't be excessive. I drove myself mad but the doctor said just basic wiping of heavily used surfaces, hand washing, vacuuming and weekly bedding washes is enough! I drove my self mad though. Cleaning all day, every day. Beating myself up if I felt I didn't clean enough

Are you planning to treat again in 2 weeks?

Livinginleggings · 19/09/2020 02:36

Thanks- it's reassuring to know it's not just me!! I think I will treat again in 2 weeks. The chemist gave me enough for the family to have one dose each and said to treat again in two weeks if there are still symptoms. I gave everyone a dose of the meds yesterday afternoon but at bedtime yesterday and bedtime today DD10 and DD8 were both still complaining about itchy bottoms. So, I think it's better repeat the dose to be safe. I don't want to hear more itchy bottom complaints another 7 months!

3 in 7 months isn't too bad.
They say at any one time 50% of under 10s are infected.
Just worm them monthly like a cat/dog. Grin
