Rash on 6 week old baby

watermelonsugar99 · 10/09/2020 19:40

Hi, does anyone know what this rash could be?

He is 6 weeks on Tuesday and has had the a rash on his face from about 1 week old, I got told it was milk spots and they'll go away soon. Today I noticed the rash had flared up and got worse on his face and when I've checked his body it's now all down his back and chest. He doesn't have a worrying temperature but he is hot to touch on head neck and back, he's been very unsettled today, constantly crying and not sleeping! I do have a doctors appointment for him tomorrow anyways so I will mention it but I just wanted to see if anyone had any ideas?

@1940s I am taking him to A&E, calm down. I posted too early as trying to feed him & he kicked my phone out my handConfused

Aw poor dab, hope he is okay op xx

I don't care about the rash. I care that if a 6 week baby came into my children's ward with a temperature of 39 then I would expect that, within an hour, they should have had bloods taken and started on IV antibiotics for presumed sepsis. If they did not receive this treatment it would be treated as a serious incident. Because you do not muck around with sepsis in infants.

Flamingolingo · 10/09/2020 21:25

@watermelonsugar99 I think that’s for the best, and maybe he’s fine. But if he is poorly then you could be in seriously unwell territory. Even if his temp is ok when you get there, then mention that it wasn’t. Good luck!

nocoolnamesleft · 10/09/2020 21:25

Phew, cross posted. Really glad you're going in to get checked out.

1940s · 10/09/2020 21:44

Please don't tell me to calm down. You posted pics of a rash. You said his temp had reached 39 and you seemed quite blasé about these symptoms which started in the afternoon. Next time put phone and MN down and take your tiny baby straight to A and E

watermelonsugar99 · 10/09/2020 21:55

@1940s I posted a picture of a rash because I wanted some advice. I took his temperature AFTER I'd already wrote the post hence why I said "He doesn't have a worrying temperature but he is hot to touch on head neck and back" I didn't have an actual thermometer but used the only thing I had to hand, that was because someone had commented about if it's over 38C he needs to be seen ASAP. I was being "blasé" because the only symptoms he had in the afternoon was the rash, the temperature didn't start until about 5 minutes before I posted on here. If he had a big temperature the second the rash flared up I would have took him to A&E earlier.

Truthfully if my 6 week old came up with that rash even without a temperature I'd take them to a and e. It's way way too risky and hugely irresponsible to seek advice from an online forum with a 6 week old presenting a rash like he has.

watermelonsugar99 · 10/09/2020 22:25

@1940s as I've stated before, the rash has been there for weeks and I was told it was milk spots by 2 different professionals, one who was a paediatrician in Children's A&E. It got worse today after his bottle, once again have already said this has been happening after every bottle. Just this time it was a bit more red. I assumed it was because of an intolerance and it was getting worse due to that. I'm a ftm and when I was last seen by the paediatrician he made me feel like I was being extremely stupid and spoke to me like a child just because I'm a young mam. If you were told by 2 different professionals the exact same thing, I'm sure you'd feel a bit better about a situation especially when they specialise in children's health.

I’m sorry you’ve been treated like that. It’s horrid when drs make you feel stupid for caring about your baby, (been there - looking at you Dr Darren, people don’t just schlep up to the hospital at 2am unless they’re worried). Hopefully everything is ok with your baby

watermelonsugar99 · 10/09/2020 23:09

@Flamingolingo it's awful, I went in because he wouldn't keep any form of milk down he kept vomiting it all back up. They looked at me as though I was stupid and basically just said he'll be fine stop worrying Confused

What I did is just make the change to a non cows milk diet. The gp was shit with me too and the health visitors. Try a different milk if formula feeding. After I think its 6 weeks see how he is. And take pics as proof. Then head to gp or health visitor and show them. They believed me after that.

Megan2018 · 10/09/2020 23:43

Buy a thermometer!! It’s a vital piece of equipment for a baby, no excuse not to have one! I must’ve taken my 1 year olds temp about a 100 times already. With Covid especially you need to know if your baby feels hot or has a fever. You can’t always tell by touch.

Always ring 111 for advice, we’ve had to call 4 times this year and they are always super helpful. We had to call at the height of Covid earlier this year when she banged her head, we are a long way from a hospital and didn’t really want to be exposed by going in unnecessarily but were also concerned as she did wallop herself (we live rurally) and they had the hospital call us twice to check up instead. I’ve found them to be great with babies (not so great with adults!)

watermelonsugar99 · 10/09/2020 23:59

@NoRoomInBed I've tried a different brand of milk but haven't had much luck unfortunately. I'm going to try the GP in the morning and see what they say, if not I'm going to go private as the hospital have been shit tonight as well.

@Megan2018 I have bought a thermometer. It's nice they rang you to check up, I'm lucky in the fact that I live 5 minutes down the road from the hospital so if I need to I can get there quickly

What did they say at A&E?

nocoolnamesleft · 11/09/2020 00:18

What did they say in A&E? Did you tell them about the fever?

watermelonsugar99 · 11/09/2020 00:42

Yeah I told them, on my way home now. Once again they may as well have just rolled their eyes at me and laughed in my face. Probably would have made me feel better. The rash had gone down a bit by the time we got there and as I said his temp was already going down, it was fully back to normal by the time we got seen and he said the rash was 'normal' even when I showed the pictures that were posted on here. When I mentioned the temperature he said and I quote "well we've took it and it's completely fine" in such a patronising tone. It got to the point where they weren't listening to any of my concerns at all and didn't seem interested in the slightest. I asked about a potential milk allergy etc and he said it's "highly unlikely" as it's not as common as you'd thinkConfusedI'm seeing the GP in about 8 hours and if I don't get anywhere with them then I'm going to phone around to see if I can go private and get an appointment straight away. Thank you to everyone who messaged me saying I needed to take him ASAP! Even though I didn't get anywhere in regards to answers, at least his temperature is downSmile Will post again tomorrow when I've spoke to the GP and let you know what he says.

OP posts:
Flamingolingo · 11/09/2020 06:48

Ugh. I hate it when they’re so dismissive. Please, please get a thermometer for home.

Re: milk allergy, what other symptoms does he have besides the rash? Is he a content baby? Or is he unsettled? What is his poo like?

watermelonsugar99 · 11/09/2020 09:58

@Flamingolingo doctor was also the same, said the rash etc is normal. I've got a thermometer coming today, I ordered one last night Smile He vomits after every bottle, pulls a disgusted face when he drinks it, he's very unsettled after feeds, has loose poos but only goes once a day and struggles getting it out sometimes, a lot of wind and stomach rumbling, it seems like sometimes his stomach hurts him and his rash flares up and it always sounds like his breathing is very heavy & noisy. I've made sure to get the breathing part checked out in case it was something else& it wasn't, but again it's after a bottle

Sounds like how my wee one was. Can you afford to buy the dairy free milk yourself aand give it a try? My wee guy grew out of it when he was 2. had pretty severe eczema for a while too. No one would listen to me either.

watermelonsugar99 · 11/09/2020 11:27

@NoRoomInBed yeah I could afford it, even if I couldn't I'd still find a way to do it if it would help him! I'm allergic to dairy so know how they like to hike the prices up a bit! I didn't realise I could do that though? I got told not to take anything out of his diet without speaking to a healthcare professional

OP posts:
NoRoomInBed · 11/09/2020 11:41

Theres a goat's milk formula you can buy in Tesco's atm could try that while still pushing at the gp?

NoRoomInBed · 11/09/2020 11:42

You can buy dairy free milk from chemists though they may have to order it in. Superdrug at some in at one point.

IwishIwasyoda · 11/09/2020 11:51

Good luck OP. My DS has lactose intolerance. He started with diarrhoea suddenly- I was changing 8-10 poo nappies a day but it took a while to get diagnosed as I was fobbed off with its a virus for weeks/ months. I personally think he had had issues since he was born, very windy, small feeds, and often, difficult to settle but all these were dismissed until something tipped him over into digestive problems.

We finally got it diagnosed about 6-7 months old when GP prescribed alternative milk saying we would know within 3 days if it was working. And she was right all symptoms cleared up
