Any idea what this rash is?

13yo ds has a rash on his inner thigh, and a little patch on his lower back as well. He showed it to me last night when it started itching him, so I gave him an antihistamine. Today the rash looks like tiny blisters, and there's a new patch below the original cluster of patches. Any idea what it might be? Is this a trip to the GP?

Looks almost like a shingles rash

Babymamamama · 07/09/2020 21:50

I had a rash like that in July. I honestly think it was covid but the GP refused to consider that idea and prescribed moisturisers and steroid cream. It has gone now. Still don't know what it was. I would consult GP maybe you can email in those pics. That's what I had to do. GP didn't want to see me in person.

Looks like shingles.

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 07/09/2020 22:05

My DD & her friend & her family had a similar rash last year. They think it was caused by a different brand of hot tub cleaner/disinfectant than they usually use.

Your DS's rash may not be contact dermatitis as it also looks a bit like shingles/chickenpox or a rash caused by a plant.

How is your DS in himself? Any aches or pains anywhere?
Definitely check it out with your GP.

Another vote for shingles, has he ever had chicken pox?

lilfoxfur · 07/09/2020 22:11

That's shingles, mine looked exactly like it

Dilbertian · 07/09/2020 22:12

I wondered about shingles, but he's otherwise completely well, and it doesn't hurt. It's also in two completely separate locations. He had chickenpox in pre-school.

Looks a bit like Dermatitis Herpetiformis (celiac rash), is it symmetrical over his body?

Iwasonceabrownie · 07/09/2020 22:20

I had shingles and was completely well with it. It does look like it.

79abbot · 07/09/2020 22:27

DS has a similar rash. In her case it's Molluscum contagiosum, which is usually a harmless infection that causes small dimpled spots to appear on the skin.

Dilbertian · 07/09/2020 22:28

No, it's not symmetrical at all. He had a negative blood test for coeliac about 5y ago.

Dilbertian · 07/09/2020 22:30

He's had molluscum. Didn't look like this.

It does loom a bit like Shingles. Is it all one side of body?

My DD had what we think was shingles. It was only a few spots and she was not at all ill. GP couldn't think what else it could be though.

It cleared up in a week or so.

joystir59 · 07/09/2020 22:38

It looks like impetigo

Anyonebut · 07/09/2020 22:38

By negative blood test for Celiac, do you mean negative antibodies or negative genes?
Dermatitis Herpetiformis is usually symmetrical but not always.

joystir59 · 07/09/2020 22:41

Sorry, scabies not impetigo..

snowballer · 07/09/2020 22:45

One of my children had (diagnosed) shingles recently and it looked exactly like this - see pic. He wasn't unwell at all with it so no other symptoms other than the rash. I'd say that's almost certainly shingles

Any idea what this rash is?
PlonkyPlink · 07/09/2020 22:45

GP here. Shingles (assuming it’s only on one side of then body?). Doesn’t look like impetigo.

Planetzog · 07/09/2020 22:48

It looks like my son's eczema. But rashes can be a sign of coronavirus but think they cover more skin covid.joinzoe.com/post/skin-rash-covid

Left inner thigh and also just above and slightly to the right of his sacrum.

I thought shingles was always in one location only.

Dilbertian · 07/09/2020 23:06

I guess I'm calling the GP tomorrow morning.

Anyonebut · 07/09/2020 23:09

Always a good idea to get these things checked.
(As an aside negative Celiac antibodies don't necessarily rule out celiac on their own without other tests. Negative on the genes does rule it out)

dementedpixie · 07/09/2020 23:14

Isn't always just in 1 location but follows the line of a nerve

fleurdeliz · 09/09/2020 07:21

My daughter has this! Did you find out what it was?
