Any dentists about? Spiky protrusion in 7 yo gum?

Bit of a weird one. DD is 7 and mentioned today something sharp in her gum, just above her front incisors (central and next one along).

The spiky bit is hard to see but when I run my finger over the gum it’s definitely there. Feels like she has the end of a toothpick or needle embedded in her gum. Pretty sure it’s not a foreign body though .

We went to the dentist last Friday and this (presumably) wasn’t there then.

She hasn’t had any extractions. She’s lost milk teeth there but I thought they all came out cleanly...

I’ll call the dentist but I know they are booked solid for months, we were lucky to get last week’s appointment. Grateful for any ideas in the meantime?

Google mesiodens, this is the most likely thing and ask your dentist for advice.
If her adult incisors are already there and that's what they think it is, watch and wait, it's likley to need removal but the further it comes through he easier it is to deal with.

Thanks so much! If it was this, would it have shown up on dental x rays? I think she’s had x rays but can’t quite remember.

What she has doesn’t quite match up with the images of mesiodens because it’s to one side rather than central, in front rather than behind, and it’s really pointy (like the point of a needle rather than the point of a canine tooth). However that does seem the most likely, I can’t find anything else it might be.

I will ask the dentist - when they finally have an appointment.

It would show up on a periapical xray but these aren't usually taken at the front unless we're looking for something. They can show up on the big xrays that show all the teeth at once but sometimes the front area is blurred so we don't see them.

Supernumerary tooth? My DC had one of those at a similar age. Had to be removed by the dentist but a simple procedure

Thanks, I checked with the dentist, they don’t have front teeth x rays but are going to see her this week. I can only think it’s a supernumerary tooth but let’s see what the dentist says.
