Movicol?

My son is 17 months and has been on movicol for around 6/7 months. Before that he was on lactulose but it didn't help at all.

I give him one sachet a day and that usually helps but recently he's still been going 4/5 days without pooing and then when he does he's still really struggling to get it out.

Like he goes off on his own, doesn't want any help or attention! He goes bright red in the face trying to squeeze it out! Sometimes he's crying because it just be that painful for him!

Just wondering if anyone else has been in the same situation? My guts telling me there is something wrong and the doctors need to look into it more but I just wondered if anyone had any experience or advice! Tia x

No advice but You are not alone with this issue.

we have a similar situation with our DS Who is 3, been on movical for months 1 sachet a day and was doing ok but the last few weeks It suddenly isn’t working as well & he’s started withholding. We are currently on day 3 of not going Again 😩

We did up his dose to 2 sachets but that just made it to loose, which doesn’t help when he’s terrified to go anyway.

Hope someone comes along soon with better advice

My DS is 7 years old and has been on movicol for 5 years. I cannot deny this has been a long and distressing journey and for a long time i just felt so helpless. Once he started school it just got more of a problem and difficult for him socially to have any independent play dates. Anyway we have turned a corner, things have got better in recent times and we may look to reduce the dose. I have read a few books on this over time in my desperate state but i really think the key is you must must must stop them withholding! Make sure they go sit after every meal. If they have got into withholding you will need a dose where they are quite loose, especially if they have anxiety about going and its easier to do this before school age. Must do clearout doses whenever you think they are impacted which for us has meant the odd week off school. Diet needs to be good, lots of water really important and really limit dairy intake and processed carbs to an absolute minimum. I hope you can get sorted soon, i think my ds was more serious because for a while we didnt realise how much he'd been constipated and the bowel stretched.
