14 month old sudden weakness in legs

Hi guys,
About 2 weeks ago my 14 month old boys right leg started giving out from under him and he would sit or just crawl for about 15minutes while keeping his leg bent.. Then he will be ok for few hours until it will happen again. This is getting more and more frequent and today his other leg was the same.

Thursday last week i took him to my gp who just put him on the floor saw him walk and boo'd me off saying its fine and normal and just give him multivitamins.
Not satisfied i took him A&E on satirday where they said give him ibupofren and paracetamol for 48 hours see if that makes a difference. I did that course and today i took him A&E again because today he was losing strength in his other leg and could barely walk. He was struggling when they tried to make him walk and despite seeing him like that they just said its a muscle problem so just continue the ibupofren & paracetamol course for another week then take him back to your gp.
I feel that they are taking this too lightly and something is wrong.
He had his 1 year immunusation boost on 21st july. Coukd it be connected to that? Has anyone else experiences anything lkke this? Going mad with worry

I don’t know the answer but bumping for you. I hope someone comes along who knows what this could be.

AgentCooper · 02/09/2020 20:20

I don’t know the answer but I feel for you Flowers can you ask the doc to test his vitamin D? It’s just a wee blood spot test and if he’s deficient then he’ll need a proper dose, not just a multivitamin. I say this only because I know vit D deficiency can show up as pain and weakness in the legs.

Does he seem to be well in himself otherwise?

Mumofmyboy · 02/09/2020 20:24

Hi - google transient synovitus (irritable hip syndrome) - could it be that? My son had this twice - once when he was about 2 years old and then again at around 4 years old. First time he had it he literally got up one morning and couldn't walk... kept falling over... after x-rays hospital confirmed this is what it was - he was absolutely fine after a week or so.

Have they done any blood tests? Is there any swelling of the joints/pain? Any recent coughs/colds? Does the anti-inflammatory help? If you can capture on video to show them in case he is difficult to examine, and try and see a different GP too 🙈 there are lots of reasons why this could be happening, reactive arthritis for example as well as vitamin deficiencies, so try not to worry yourself silly about it (easy for me to say I know) but they should be taking you more seriously, it is not normal to lose your ability to walk properly.

minipie · 02/09/2020 20:31

Ah mumofmyboy I knew I’d read about something like that. It could well be that OP.

Although as I recall' it’s important to have other things (which are rarer but need treatment) ruled out so would get him seen anyway.

GetTheDoorFrank · 02/09/2020 20:35

My ds has been clumsy and very uncoordinated since he could walk. He is 5 now and 2yrs ago got diagnosed with femoral anteversion in both legs. He has started to lose his legs from under him when walking/running. His legs also go in circles when he is walking (i shudder to think what its doing to his hips 🙈) he has been referred back to physio so will see what they say now

Mumofmyboy · 02/09/2020 20:38

Yes @minipie when we took my son to hospital with it they did xray and look for breaks, bruising etc to rule out anything more serious first but were quite confident that it was transient synovitus (doctor said it was quite common although I had never heard of it before)... it was very scary at first as he literally woke up one day and couldn't walk and when he tried to his leg just gave way underneath him - however it did get better very quickly.

Is he showing any signs of pain? Does the medicine help at all?
Did the hospital do any x-rays?

I know kids can compensate if they hurt themselves, if he's fallen awkwardly recently it could well be a slight fracture.

Wouldn't be happy with medics just fobbing you off (although this seems to be a thing with Drs at the moment), keep pressing them and make a bit of a nuisance of yourself. You know somethings not right, you're his mum, you know best. Trust your instincts.

Good luck Thanks
