Weird rash on four year old (contains photos)

DS has developed a strange rash that has changed within the space of two hours. We’re currently on holiday in the SW waiting for an out of hours doctors appointment but as it’s the BH weekend there are very long delays. Does anyone know what it could be? He doesn’t have any other symptoms. Sorry best I could do with the photo Blush

I was concerned it could be Covid but was trying to rule it out in my mind but that does look very similar. His grandpa was positive in late July. We saw him for the first time a few days ago and have been more places than usual due to being on holiday so much higher risk of exposure. How is your son now heart of strings? Did he have any other symptoms?

Hope you manage to get a doctors appointment very soon.

He's absolutely fine. The hives was his only symptom. They were calling it post viral urticaria.

Me and my husband have had some of the other non identifiable covid symptoms such as fatigue, muscle aches.

It's mystery. 8 weeks on occasionally the rash still comes up. It's never fully gone though.

He's had antihistamine which has helped.

So did my sons!!!! Like went then would suddenly appear again out of nowhere

Agree with hives especially as no other symptoms, my DS gets it regularly. In future it's always worth packing anti histamine /having it at home, you never know when you may need it. I'd go to a supermarket and get some pirton it works v quick.

Heartofstrings · 29/08/2020 23:15

@OverTheRainbow88 yes almost identical. Worth noting that none of us actually tested positive for covid. We were just told very firmly by the gp the it IS post covid and antihestimine is the only way

LesLavandes · 29/08/2020 23:29

You need to go to an out of hours doctor asap.
You should not take advice on MN. Call 111

Tatum1234 · 29/08/2020 23:44

Looks like hives to me too, whenever I’ve had it before it has moved around my body over time.

howlathebees · 29/08/2020 23:48

Can you go to an out of hours doctors?

OverTheRainbow88 · 30/08/2020 05:50

@Heartofstrings

Thank you. Both my boys had this beginning of March, before they realised covid may cause kids rashes and then both OH and I were Ill with temp and cough but this was before they were testing general public.

@whowhatwherewhenwhy
How is your son this morning? Hope you managed to get an app.

whowhatwherewhenwhy · 30/08/2020 09:34

The doctor called back this morning and from our description thinks it's either an allergic reaction (so recommended antihistamine) or a virus. It's faded a lot overnight and he's still well in himself so it's mainly a case of monitoring and trying him with the antihistamines. Thanks for all your comments :) and I'll know to add children's piriton to the medical bag.

Did you ever discover what it was @whowhatwherewhenwhy ?

whowhatwherewhenwhy · 08/12/2020 21:11

I think it must have been an allergic reaction - it faded and he's had nothing similar since. I have a theory that it may have been caused by his swimsuit that had been kept in a leather bag (perhaps a chemical in the leather?) so I'm no longer using it to be on the safe side.

That's great that it has cleared up and wasn't anything more sinister.

RosesforMama · 16/12/2020 10:31

Hi there
Two of mine have had this - it is hives - in toddlers this is very commonly an immature immune system overreaction. The toddler gets a completely minor virus and the immune system, which is still fine tuning itself, gets a bit overenthusiastic and these hives are the response. So its sort of an "allergy" to a virus rather than a food or environmental allergen in the majority of cases.
