Morning Drink

Hi everyone

I wanted to add a poll here, but can't seem to find the option.

So I can get a view of what other parents offer their children in the morning when they wake up as I feel what my partner offers is the wrong option.

I offer our 3 year old milk, my partner juice (not squash) and a biscuit.

I would be interested in other parents think the juice and biscuit route is acceptable as it offers no good nutritional value, just lovely sugar intake.

One word is fine, just trying to get a general idea.

A drink of milk with their breakfast, don't really offer a drink thing.

NannyR · 25/08/2020 10:06

Don't really offer a drink first thing.

jomaIone · 25/08/2020 10:07

Absolutely no need for the biscuit, just offer breakfast. Juice is fine, but should be diluted half and half with water. Milk still has sugar in, although less than fresh orange, so it's not that bad really.

A biscuit before breakfast?

theskyispurple · 25/08/2020 10:09

Water here, no juice or milk to drink at 3. Plenty of dairy at meal times

Coriandersucks · 25/08/2020 10:10

Milk for our 2 year old - has it in his cot - nothing for our 3 year old he has a cup of water by his bed all night. With breakfast we just offer water, never had juice. Feel a bit mean now!

Mine aren't that young now but at 3 it would have been milk with breakfast. Juice would only have been an occasional thing, very watered down.

Can't remember having biscuits around regularly then either.

GenericUsername101 · 25/08/2020 10:20

Only offer water, but will give milk if requested. Juice is only really at parties etc.

215m3 · 25/08/2020 10:20

Thanks for the replies, this is before breakfast, this is when she wakes up.

I diluted the juice, but my 3 year old knew it was and refused it.

Mine just get water. If they’re hungry before breakfast they ask for a banana generally.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 25/08/2020 20:46

Why not just have breakfast ? They don’t need food the second they wake. My 3yr old wakes between 6-7am and we eat beakfast between 7-8

Findahouse21 · 25/08/2020 20:49

Water only for any drinks at home or school

RedCatBlueCat · 25/08/2020 20:53

First thing my kids eat/drink is at breakfast.
Oldest has milk. Youngest (and I) have water.

TooMinty · 25/08/2020 21:00

At that age mine would have a cup of milk while I had a cup of tea in bed and woke up properly. Then down for breakfast, water or more milk to drink with that. Now they are older (5 and 7) they get fruit juice (squeezed not diluting/squash). Definitely no biscuit before breakfast ever!

SamsMumsCateracts · 25/08/2020 21:05

Mine have always just had milk or water with their breakfast. No biscuits though and no juice, it's really, really bad for their teeth. Occasionally they'll have a biscuit with their lunch, but once a week at most, slightly more often in the holidays.

Do you eat the second you wake up? Children are quite capable of waiting half hour or so, it won't harm them.

maryberryslayers · 25/08/2020 21:17

DS 23 months often has milk first thing. He comes in to our bed for a snuggle and his drink. We'll often have a tea/coffee with him. He'll go straight down for breakfast then.

BlackInk · 26/08/2020 09:37

My DC breastfed first thing in the morning until they were about 2 and when they stopped BF we offered a little cup of cow's milk, although my DD never liked it so we stopped pretty quickly. They're older now, but at age 3 it was milk/water/nothing first thing. Juice with breakfast or at a cafe/party occasionally.

Osquito · 26/08/2020 09:43

DS is 6. We rarely have juice in the house but every couple/few weeks when we do I will give him a small serving of it alongside his breakfast as I think it helps the body absorb iron...? Otherwise he drinks water, as there’s usually plenty of milk in his porridge or cereal, or drinks milk if it’s toast and eggs.

When he was younger, he did not get juice at breakfast... Perhaps if we were on holiday.
