Teenage growth spurts

DD 14 has suddenly shot up to my height. This has coincided with a bit of weight loss. Not deliberate. I think it’s because she’s basically not eating as much. She gets up late which means she misses lunch or breakfast.

Took her for bloods which were all OK except slightly low white cells. (Doc not concerned but repeating test). Trying not to freak out about this but thinking she had a recent cold etc.

Anyway point of post is to ask if anyone else’s kid suddenly got really skinny at puberty? She seems otherwise fine. And it’s defo not an eating disorder.

Should I get her on Complan?

Both mine shot up and also gained weight. Gaining height usually means gaining weight. Sometimes when they shoot up, they look skinnier but it definitely doesn’t translate to weight loss because of the increased height.

Can you put together a breakfast that might appeal to her? That she can eat whenever she gets up? My dd is similarly aged, the same height as me and conscious of weight and eats yoghurt and granola for breakfast. Sometimes scrambled egg.

Do you know if your dd’s periods have Ben impacted by the weight loss as that is often a measure of being too skinny?

Thanks for reply. She definitely has lost weight but don’t know exact amount. Periods haven’t started yet but I was a late starter too.

Will work on getting her to eat more.

Is she underweight?

SpringSunshineandTulips · 21/08/2020 22:12

Does she have anything else going on? Tired? Thirsty? Using the toilet more?

Hyperfish101 · 21/08/2020 22:16

She’s not underweight. She’s in normal range. Just concerned at how skinny she now seems. Not tired really, although has a lot of late nights 🙄. No thirst. Doc did full bloods and nothing like diabetes or Coeliacs disease present.

That’s good as I was thinking diabetes. Glad it’s not.

If she's a healthy wait I certainly wouldn't start Complain. I went through a very skinny stage as a teenager but have always stayed a healthy weight.

Thanks all.

"Should I get her on Complan?"
Noooooooo! Grin

She sounds like me at her age. I went from a fat 13 year-old to a slim 14 year-old. I grew 3 inches in height and dropped about two stones. Like you, my mum took me to see the GP 'in case'. He confirmed it was all perfectly normal, puberty, losing my puppy fat etc. I wasn't eating particularly differently either, so I wouldn't worry about that.
