Tics?

Hello, just wanted to see if anyone has had any experience of tics developing in kids?
My 6 year old daughter has started constantly clearing her throat and making a kind of grunting noise... she seems completely unaware she is doing it. Drives us round the bend. On looking into it I have read that it's really common and the best thing is to ignore. But it seems to be getting worse! I am unsure if I should take her to the doctors, she isn't "unwell" as such and I am concerned doing this will make her more aware of it and make it worse.
Has anyone had this before? Please tell me it just stops as quickly as it's starts?!

The only experience I have is that I was that child! I had a few in primary school - one was a weird way of blinking, one was a sort of jump (the kind of movement you make if someone made you jump, rather than leaping in the air) and so on. I can remember them fairly clearly and I did feel quite compelled to do them (as in I wasn’t putting it on/making myself do it for attention!) I did grow out of them, but in the interim I can remember that relaxation techniques really helped - sort of sitting or lying down and concentrating on my breathing, that sort of thing. It made the feeling of compulsion fade.

My dad started having throat clearing, grunting and eye-rolling RICS after her pre-school boosters. We didn’t see the connection until a health visitor randomly mentioned her son having similar tics and they started right after his pre-school boosters. She’s started growing out of them now though it’s been 7 or so years of nonstop intrusive noise in the home. The only time there was no grunting was when she was asleep.

Dd, not dad!

LetMeVent · 29/08/2020 12:06

And tics, not RICS! Autocorrect is terrible.

Hiya
My DD 11 has developed tics since lock down both verbal and physical tics! Her doctor believes that it has been brought on by extreme stress and it's just how her brain is reacting to it! They won't look into a formal diagnosis for 12 months as they can just go away on their own
She starts high school in a few days and I am dreading it 🤮
It's definitely best to ignore them in my experience as tics really do love a platform if they get a chance x

Summersoul, we are in exactly the same position. DS started with throat clearing in about April/May and it has progressed into a cough at times. The doctor thought it might be allergies, so we have tried two types of antihistamine, but with little success. He has had a covid test although we were sure it wasn't that, but I am dreading him going back to his new school next week. He says himself that if he thinks about it, it brings it on. I am trying not to mention it at all but it's so hard, and driving me up the wall! He did have a similar tic after we moved house a few years ago, bit that went after a couple of months ignoring it.

Thanks for the responses. Sorry some of you are dealing with it too! Still going strong, worse if anything. Driving me insane!! We are ignoring and hoping it goes away, DD seems up be worse when she is sat watching tv and it isn’t as bad when she’s busy/distracted.

We've had grunting (still do on occasion) and now a face-pulling thing, sort of like a scrunch. It doesn't seem to phase my husband at all, but I think about it/worry over it constantly. Someone else was telling me she thought her child had started with tics after the preschool boosters as well, though for us I noticed them earlier than that. I have a single tic as well, so probably a genetic element. At the moment it doesn't seem to bother my daughter (she is 6), but I dread this changing/anyone giving her a hard time--she's a sensitive soul, too, whereas if it were my other child he'd have no trouble giving people a piece of his mind. Sorry, haven't really added much that's useful, just that we've got it going on here, too, and if people are happy to update on how things are going, that would be great. :)

We had this with are second girl at about 5 years old. Constantly clearing throat and not aware of it. We tried to ignore it as much as possible and I did go away on its own.

Just wondering how people's children were doing tic wise having gone back to school? My DS started his new high school yesterday, I did email them last week to let them know about his throat clearing and cough and they were fine about it. The doctor prescribed a steroid nasal spray and a ventolin inhaler in case it was an allergy/asthma throat clearing but said it was more likely to be a tic/habit. He didn't understand why I was worried about sending him to school with a possible cough! But all went well yesterday, although I don't like to quiz him about it, as if I bring up his tic he does it even more!

taykitty20 · 08/09/2020 16:58

Has anyone who has been dealing with this for some time (or a short time actually, doesn't really matter lol) had any issues with peers/teachers noticing or making it an issue? Would you flag with teacher before they say anything or sort of leave it to see if they notice? My daughter doesn't mind her tics at present so I fear making it an issue when it isn't one (for her--for me is another story).

CoffeeandChocolateplease · 08/09/2020 17:43

taykitty20 I've made my son's school aware, but his involves a cough so I had to really due to current situation. He hasn't said that anyone has mentioned it. I don't want to ask him as I worry that it'll set it off even more! Perhaps if her teachers are made aware but don't mention it to her?

KindergardenCentre · 08/09/2020 17:51

Dd briefly had a throat clearing tic. I spoke to the gp about it and she suggested it was a combination of a slight post nasal drip as the trigger with a low grade anxiety causing the repetition. Dd started a speech and drama class a few months later which boosted her confidence no end and soon the tic stopped. Hopefully your dc's is reasonably easily resolved too.

CheeseAndBeans · 08/09/2020 18:49

We seem to have moved away from throat clearing now... but still have a constant grunt/kind of hum. DD started back at school yesterday. We didn’t mention it to the teacher and she hasn’t said anything about anyone saying anything to her. If she does I’ll have a quick chat with the teacher I guess. She is doing it loads after school though. She seems to do it more when tired and watching tv/playing on the tablet. Still driving me round the bend but ignoring still!

My five-year-old spent a few months last year tftvbbkg HDTv making a weird slurping noise, like he was slurping up excess saliva. He stopped at some point during lockdown.

NaughtipussMaximus · 08/09/2020 18:57

Sorry, not sure what is going on with the gibberish there!

taykitty20 · 09/09/2020 19:41

Thanks Coffee :) Yes, I can see how coughing would have to be addressed now. Wishing everyone well x

taykitty20 · 09/09/2020 19:42

Thx Cheese/Beans, we have loads after school, too.... takes a lot for me not to say anything x
