15 month old excessive sleeping

Hi,

I’m completely new to mums eat so I’m not sure if I’m in the right place. My daughter is almost 16 months and for the past month she has been sleeping excessively. Her usual bedtime is 7pm but we have just moved house so on busy days she has sometimes been going to bed at 9 at the latest and her routine has been a bit all over the place. However, she doesn’t tend to wake up for the day until at least 11am, and at times It’s been as late as 1pm! Sometimes she will still want a nap later in the day. I have tried waking her up at a set time on a morning but she’s tired and wants to go back up to bed after an hour or so for a nap so she definitely needs her sleep! The doctors have been on about referring her to the paediatrics at the hospital for blood tests but my health visitor said this can be traumatic Sad

I’m so worried about her. Has anyone else experienced anything similar with their little ones?

What has her diet been like? Has it changed? I remember when DN’s parents moved his diet went from home made higher calorie food to (mostly) low calorie pouches and it really took it out of him.

I would report this and ask for it to be moved to the sleep board. You'll get good advice on there! 🙏

I really don't think you need sleep advice. Your daughter for the last month only so excessively tired and can sleep from 9pm until 1pm the next day. You MUST go and get this checked out this really doesn't sound like a symptom of bad sleep patterns and you shouldn't rely on MN for any advice regarding routines without getting medical advice for this (despite blood tests being traumatic)

Her diet has stayed pretty much the same! She’s always eaten healthily m, I try to give her Joe Wickes recipes and she’s breastfed and I give her vitamins too! Nothing has really changed. I wondered maybe if it could be iron related though!

Thank you, I am getting it checked out. We have a second doctors appointment on Thursday and we will go from there. I was just hoping for some support and reassurance more than anything from mumsnet as I’m worried about her and suffer from awful health anxiety.

Ahh thank you, I didn’t even know there was a sleep board! I do think it’s health related but some people on the sleep board might have similar experiences!

As someone who can also suffer with health anxiety it's really best to stay away from posting these health concerns (no matter how tempting it can feel) only your Dr can diagnose and in the meantime you will have well intentioned ideas around waking her up at 6am to start the day, feeding high calorie foods, changing nap times and any or all of those could distract from an underlying health condition.

My son started sleeping excessively from about the same age. I was worried too. We paid for a private appointment with a paediatrician who did blood tests for various conditions and also all his levels and all came back fine. The sleeping persisted and we took him again last year (age 4) and again he had tests done and all was ok. The paediatrician said that sleep was a spectrum and he's just at the high end. He will just sleep and sleep if we let him, I have to wake him every day. He never wakes on his own and even at 5 years old will sleep 13-14 hours at night if I let him.

I think getting your lo checked is definitely the right thing. They need to rule out various conditions and make sure all her levels are where they should be. Hopefully all is ok and you just have a child who likes to sleep. Now we've ruled out an medical issues we just enjoy the lie-ins!

Also, little tip. If your lo needs to have blood tests. Buy some numbing cream and apply it on the backs of her hands and the inside of her arms well ahead of any appointments. They do put numbing cream on at the appointment but I find it's never for long enough and so now I do it at home well ahead so the area is completely numb. Also by putting it on arms and hands it gives them more options for where to take the blood from. When I've done this, lo hasn't even flinched at having his blood drawn. Good luck and I hope everything is ok.

Thank you so much for your reply, it’s really reassuring to know that somebody else has been through something similar with their little one! Our GP is referring her to a paediatrician for their opinion and blood tests, so fingers crossed we will know what’s going on soon! I’m glad to hear your little one is fine! Hopefully we just have a baby who loves her sleep Smile Thank you for the tip! I will definitely try that!

Can I please enquire what the outcome of this was because my 15 month old has started sleeping a lot too!

KatieS98 · 20/10/2023 13:39

Hi! I’m the original poster but got locked out of my old account. My daughter went for blood tests and everything was fine. They weren’t too concerned and she eventually grew out of it! Please get your LO checked if you’re worried, but enjoy it while it lasts!
