Persistent threadworms

I'm currently sat in the dark in ds room whilst he writhes and cries. I know it's thread worms. He's had them before. Every three or four months. I've spent a fortune on the medicine for us all and boil washed everything he has come into contact with. His nails are short. He bathes or showers almost every day. He washes his hands properly.
He got it in lockdown so it's not from school.
We use the medicine and they go away but it feels like they are always lurking ready to appear again.
I don't know what to do. Is it just that I'm not doing something right or can you actually get medicine resistant worms?
Please help. I feel so sorry for him but I can't get out for medicine now until the morning.

Are you treating twice each time? The first time kills the living worms but not the eggs so you need to do it twice.
Like nits, in spite of what the packets say always go back to clear up the second lifecycle.

My daughter had persistent threadworms and a consultant that she saw (not for threadworms but another gastro issue) perscribed one tablet every day for 3 days and then once a week for two weeks. He claimed that the ususl dose isn't always enough to get completely rid of them.

Been there. Very, very trying. Best of luck, OP.

Thank you. I'll treat tomorrow and then try and get an appointment with the doctor in the week. It's such an expensive business.

Dd2 has this issue. In the end the dr gave us a pack of tablets rather than the liquid as the pharmacist said it was ridiculous The frequency she was getting them. Dd2 can tell she has them 2 days before the worms start showing!

First off, have you been treating the whole family? You are supposed to, and then give another dose after 14 days if anyone still have worms.

Second, how old is he? Dd2 is still in night time pull ups so we have put some of the recurrence down to a moist area which is an ideal breeding ground.

If you haven't been treating the family, do so and give everyone the 14 day dose just in case. When we saw the gp - I went as it was ridiculous going to the pharmacy every 6 ish weeks to get worm medicine despite washing, short nails etc and asked their advice. They said gp appointment.

Anyway, gp said there wasn't much different he could do if we were doing everything else but gave us the tablets for dd2 instead. We have to treat her without fail twice. So far (fingers crossed), we've only have 1 case since they finished school in March, which is a significant change from normal. We now don't treat the whole family either as literally no one else was symptomatic or showing signs of having worms.

Hi I know this is an old thread hut wondered if you managed to get rid of them? I have a similar problem now with my dd who us 6. I suspect she may have had them some time as she has very bad eczema and scratches most nights all over. Eventually we discovered them one night by chance, she hadn't complained of itching by her bum but again is always scratching due to eczema. Anyway we all used ovex last july twice and cleaned like crazy. She has had a uti since and has had 3 different antibiotics and seems to be ok now, i said to the doctor do you think this is caused by threadworms and was dismissed. 5 weeks ago, she complained of a tickly bum so i treated immediately with ovex even though I couldnt see any in stool or at night with a light. We have been ok for 6 weeks but again she now has an itchy bum but I cant see any in her stool or at night around her bum. Im just worried if I leave it she will end up with UTI problems and never get rid of these worms!

Noone else in the house has had them or should I say had symptoms. Anyone have any advice to offer, Im driving myself and the kids crazy with all of the cleaning and hand washing!
Please tell me success stories!!!
