DS 4 UTI no antibiotics?!

DS aged 4 had a UTI 4 weeks ago. Pain when going to the loo, tummy ache, blood in his urine etc.
He was prescribed 7 days of ABs (trimethoprim) & it cleared up.

On Sunday night the symptoms returned. Had a phone appointment with the GP mon. Described the symptoms and took a sample to the surgery which was checked with a dipstick but showed no blood/white blood cells. GP has said it's therefore unlikely to be a UTI but has sent the sample to the lab just in case.

My issue is that DS is still showing symptoms & I dint know when we'll get the results. They might not even show anything.
Should I be pushing for ABs?
Anything else that mimics UTI symptoms?!

The lab report should take no more than 48 hours so I would chase that result. I would also push for a urology referral- young children often have utis due to underlying health issues. Is he constipated? That can cause them. Has he had them before?

Thanks for replying.
No word from the doctors still but he seems ok again today.
He had a UTI a few weeks ago and had similar symptoms last October but we were told it wasn't a UTI as nothing showed up on the dip test.
My eldest DS used to get them too but seemed to grow out of it aged 6.
No constipation but it has been an issue in the past. Definitely not constipated at the min though.

The GP has done the right thing in waiting for the lab results rather than just prescribing antibiotics. They will see exactly which antibiotics will be needed, if any.

My daughter's paediatrician told me that any child with recurrent utis should be referred for investigations- at least an ultrasound- in case there are underlying issues such as kidney reflux, as UTIs can cause kidney scarring if not properly addressed.

His results are back and he has an infection. I'm not sure that I agree with him having to wait 5 days with an untreated infection to be honest 😡
We're on hol next week but I will look into the urology referral, thanks

When he has finished this course wait a few days then take another sample in whether he has symptoms or not, insist it be sent to the lab, not just dipped, to make sure the infection is actually gone.

Also, if the sample was sent to the lab Monday it will have been back on Wednesday. The delay is usually the doctor reporting on it. So I used to chase after 48 hours and the doctor would check the result that day.

Yes we chased it today after not hearing anything & it had been back a while. GP has said only 3 days of antibiotics needed but I'm sure the walk in centre prescribed them for a week last time so I'll definitely take another sample when we're home.

Yes I doubt 3 days is enough

The dipstick test can be unreliable. My DD has recurring UTIs and kidney scarring and her urine goes straight to the lab now as it almost always dips neg when she has an infection. Too many times we’ve been caught out and a full-blown kidney infection has resulted. Now she starts a 10 day course of ABs immediately on onset of what we recognise as infection symptoms. I realise she’s an extreme case though... this article is interesting. www.google.co.uk/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/society/2018/dec/12/researchers-call-for-new-uti-urinary-tract-infections-testing-method
