Fillings v silver crown caps

So I’m gutted, just back from the dentist and been told my son has two iffy teeth, they’ve said the practice no longer do fillings on children’s molars and now only crown them. Does this sound normal? We saw a new dentist as our lovely lady has recently retired. I’ve called the practice to query if there was another dentist we could ask but they confirmed this is the new practice policy and another dentist would suggest the same. Do they take a long time to fit?
Will they be really visible? Will they be uncomfortable? The practice said they’d email me some info but nothings come through...

Find another dentist. I've had both fillings and crowns. Crowning is a much more drastic treatment and should be only embarked upon when filling is not an option--I assume this isn't the case with your son. Dentists have repeatedly told me that crowns are not as good as one's own teeth (even when own teeth are filled), and not as strong and resilient. After having had problems with a crown for years, it finally fell off and couldn't be stuck back on as the 'peg' of tooth to which it was stuck had broken. So now I have a gap and am facing an implant, which will cost thousands of pounds. As I said, find another dentist.

A child's crown is not the same as an adult's crown .

It will be a hall crown. Takes a few minutes to fit. No drilling required so much easier for child and generally much better longevity. Usually once it is in place that’s it until the baby tooth falls out whereas fillings often require replacement. However yes it will be visible as it covers the whole crown of the tooth. I’m a dentist and if it was my child I’d opt for a hall crown every time.
