Please excuse the panic in this post but my DS has a higher than normal temperature and I am fretting. He feels hot to touch on his head, chest and back. His temp was 37.7 about 2 hours ago but seems to be coming down. We've given him calpol and he doesn't appear to have any other symptoms. He fell asleep before having his bedtime milk then woke up after 40 mins. He's had his milk now and my DP has taken him up to bed. He's not very happy but has been alert and was watching night garden before he went up.

My question is - what signs or symptoms should I look out for now and overnight? And if his temp continues do we need to get tested for COVID?

Advice would be gratefully received!

37.7 isn't a fever. It's a slightly raised temp, if he sleeps well, he's probably fine!

There's no treatment for37.7 is hardly a fever. What have you used to check his temp? Was it a inferred or ear or which

I hope your little one is ok now, your question about what to look out for when they are poorly is a good one & can be more important than numbers on a thermometer.

The main things are how they are acting - major red flag symptoms are not wanting to do normal things, really floppy, lethargic etc -

another thing to look for is taking less liquid than normal about 50% less than normal would be a real concern.

Taking less food is less of a concern.

A temperature is something to note, but you will see on MN that some people have children with temps of 40 and they are fine & others it may be 38 and they have other red flags, so go on how they are rather than just numbers.

Other things to look for are how if they are working hard to breath, or fast breathing.

The above are general points, in regards to COVID, the three main symptoms are what trigger a test in an adult so high temperature, loss of smell/taste & new & continuous cough.

For general health there was a lullaby trust baby health app that was always very good to work through.

For Covid the symptom tracker app, not the test and trace one, but the research study one may help reassure you & you can report for a child.

My sons consultant said to think about normal childhood illnesses above COVID & if you are worried at all make contact with a Health professional.

At 37.7 its on the higher end of normal.
He maybe brewing something, Just keep an eye on him for now.
Make sure his drinking and having wet nappies.

If it goes above 38 you will all have to self isolate and get tested for covid

Thank you all so much for your replies. DS appears to be coming through it now after a second night with raised temp. I've just taken it and he's back around 36.5.

Thank you great that was really helpful and reassuring.

He's has plenty of wet nappies and still eating. He's not had this before and we're fairly anxious parents, I know he hasn't had a fever but it's still worrying.

He has no other symptoms currently so fingers crossed this is just a one off or maybe some aggressive teething.
