Red, flaky rash around DD's mouth

DD is almost 12 and since about May has had this rash around her mouth. We have been trying all manner of different creams which seem to help but it just goes back to square one ( including one suggested by a pharmacist) . At one point it was abit crusty and almost coldsore like. Thankfully that has cleared now but its still red, and flaky. We've been using Aveno cream this past week and the skin seems smoother now but still flaky and red. She's adamant she doesn't want to go to the dr's about it but with going back to school in Sept we would like to try and clear it asap. Any ideas?

Does she lick her lips?
Can you ring the docs and chat over the phone?

EduCated · 19/07/2020 21:21

Eczema? A friend breaks out like that with food intolerances (gluten, in her case).

Have you tried a hydrocortisone ointment (not cream)? DD gets similar and that tends to sort it. DD's is stress related I think.

Sadly she is a very anxious thing and is very scared about going to the dr's. Im wondering if a video call could be done. But then as with seeing the pharmacist she goes mute!

She did suck her lips but has made an effort to stop that now.
Can't think of anything that we have changed in her diet to be an allergy. ( apart from eating too much during lockdown! )

MutteringDarkly- She's had a massive puberty spurt recently so wondering if that has anything to do with it?

Impetigo?

YoBeaches · 20/07/2020 06:41

I was thinking thrush type infection, which could sync with having a puberty burst- excessive yeast production. I don't think impetigo as it's not blistering but is dd aware some of these things can spread and scar if not treated. Appreciate her anxiety also, maybe a video call would suit her better.

My DD had a similar rash with slight cracking at the corner of her mouth. It was eventually diagnosed as eczema. She also had blood tests o check her levels of vitamin B.

Ds has had this for over six months, it's been a nightmare to try and clear up. We've tried hydrocortisone , that mixed with Vaseline , fungal creams. The hydrocortisone definitely calmed it down but never properly went away . He hasn't actually been seen by the gp over lockdown at all just prescribed creams over the phone. I'm going to take him to see a dermatologist. Stress related here would make sense too

Spoke to the dr today who diagnosed seborrheic dermatitis. Hes given us a prescription to collect for tomorrow for some steroid cream to use for a few weeks. Fingers crossed it clears it up although he did say it was something she would have to live with and treat further flare ups. Poor DD.. really not going to help her anxiety.
