Toddler eyelid drooping/one eye bigger than the other. Should I be worried?

Hi all! I could just be being an over anxious first time mum, but recently I've noticed that my 16 month old has one eyelid that droops more than the other/is bigger than the other? Feel free to tell me I'm being silly!

I've only really noticed it recently, perhaps because she's gotten bigger ect but I've looked at pics of when she was smaller and she had it then too.

It doesn't seem to affect her vision and she's perfectly well and happy. Nobody else has noticed it (or if they have they haven't mentioned it) so perhaps it's something only I've noticed!

I'm wondering if it's just a quirk she has and nothing to worry about, or wether it warrants further investigation?

I've attached a couple of pics. It seems like her right eye is smaller/left eye's upper eyelid is more prominent. In some pics you can hardly see it but in others it's fairly prominent.

I tend to be over anxious and worry as it is. I had a lazy eye as a child and it needed surgical correction (totally fine now).

Thank you!

It could be congenital ptosis (drooping eyelid), or it could just be nothing. You can contact your gp if you want it looked at x

Llamazoom · 02/07/2020 19:03

It’s hardly noticeable in the photos but have it checked out if your concerned.

She is absolute gorgeous!

jessstan2 · 02/07/2020 19:04

She looks normal to me. Most people have one eye a bit bigger than the other and one nostril (probably other things). Sometimes shows more when tired.

However I don't think you have anything to worry about with your lovely daughter. You can mention it when she next has a medical check but I'm sure you'll be reassured.

brightbluegentian · 02/07/2020 19:06

If it were me I would be checking with the GP. Just to put my mind at rest

fairydustandpixies · 02/07/2020 19:42

No advice but what a gorgeous girl!!

Tolleshunt · 02/07/2020 19:47

It’s not very noticeable at all, and I bet most people don’t notice in real life. These things are always more noticeable in photos than when the face is animated.

Is it new, or has she always had it? If she’s always had it, it’s likely just a mild ptosis, as pp mentioned. My DD has one and it’s barely noticeable now she’s five, I only notice in photos if she was tired at the time.

If it’s a new thing you should give your GP a ring tomorrow.

And yes, she is absolutely gorgeous! What a little sweetie!

HavelockVetinari · 02/07/2020 19:49

Ah she's gorgeous OP, what a cutie! I don't think it's particularly noticeable, and if there are no other symptoms the GP will probably say to just keep an eye out. Most peoples' faces aren't symmetrical.

SquidwardTortellini95 · 02/07/2020 20:00

@Tolleshunt, she definitely had it from being quite little. I didn't notice it at the time but looking back at old pictures there definitely is a difference in eye size.

Thank you all for the kind words and advice, it's not that noticeable at all in real life. But being an anxious FTM I tend to worry Grin And I think she's gorgeous too, but I would wouldn't I? Grin

My youngest is the same. His left lid is slightly lower than his right. He’s ten months and its been like that since he was very young. Doesn’t seem to affect his eyesight in any way. He can spot a dropped chocolate button from across the room!

@SquidwardTortellini95 it needs looking at by paediatric ophthalmology. It's probably nothing, but needs to be investigated just to check. You need to go to your GP for a referral.

LocalDuck · 04/07/2020 03:17

Yes, my child has similar. I didn't really notice it until she was about 3 and it was more obvious when she was tired. I looked back at baby photos and it had always been there. I realised (eventually) that she has extra creases on her eyelids, and on the seemingly bigger one she has 3, but the other one only 2. I checked out my own eyes and they are the same! I had never noticed before and neither had anyone else. Her sister has a single crease on each eyelid and has perfectly symmetrical eyes.

LocalDuck · 04/07/2020 03:27

It looks really extreme here but honestly I didn't ever notice it when she was this age (around 1), and now she's much older it's only obvious (to me) when she is really tired. Nobody else notices it.

I honestly wouldn't have noticed. I suspect it's "just one of those things".

underneaththeash · 05/07/2020 23:52

Chances are it is nothing, but both star's and squid's photos would have struck me as needing further investigation in my practice.

AndreaMar · 22/01/2021 15:40

My daughter is 14 months, I started noticing something similar in my daughter back in September, then I looked at past photos and her eyes were symmetrical until June, when one eyelid decided to make a deeper crease than the other one. Sometimes they look similar most of the time they don’t. It’s being always a concern to me and I took her to an pediatric ophthalmologist today. The doctor said it is a very mild case of ptosis where the levator muscle on her left side is not as strong as the other one, but nothing to worry about unless it affects her vision which it is not at this moment. As she grows it might become unnoticeable but we will follow up every 6 months.

Hi
This is an old thread but wondering if any Mum’s can update me if their little ones outgrow this eyelid issue? My 4 month old has the same issue and it’s definitely not ptosis it’s just that her left crease sits higher than her left crease. No drooping if they lid. Feel like I’m focusing on it all the time now. I first noticed it when she was 2 months old. Last week the eyelid that’s higher changed to match the other one and it stayed that was for 2 days but then the next morning was back again.

Hi,

My little girl has the exact same thing and identical to your little one @mummytoella, I think she’s always had it but it definitely became more noticeable at around 11 months when she got her first virus and her eye just seemed to be like wow when did that happen moment?! But as we checked back on photos it seemed it was always there but not always noticeable. And I feel as she developed and her expressions became better it seemed to be more noticeable.
we’ve got an appointment to see an ophthalmologist. I obviously think she’s gorgeous but it does bother me to a point that I think it will bother her in the future if it stays like this.

Anyone had any joy on their children outgrowing?
No idea how to attach a photo?
Thanks,

Naomi

My little girl was the same, only it was much more pronounced. It corrected itself and now you can't tell it's there Smile

mummytoella · 30/05/2021 01:12

Hi we saw an ophthalmologist privately a month ago who confirmed it’s not ptosis or any problem with her sight. It’s just slightly asymmetry and in her case it happens after she’s had a nap or sleeping in a certain position. It is also more likely to happen for her if she rubs that eye.
What is happening is that both eyes have two creases one higher and one lower. The right eye seems to settle in the lower crease more and the left eye settles in the higher crease more but this is improving and it’s now about 50/50 so hopefully it keeps getting better. There’s no droop it’s just the eyelid fold sits higher. The ophthalmologist said it’s nothing to worry about and should correct over time.

I myself had similar issues with my eye creases and so does my friend. My sleeping position or how tired I am seems to affect them.

I’ve now noticed lots of people including celebrities with asymmetry in their eyelid creases.

Just over the last month it’s improved so hopefully it keeps getting better.

mummytoella · 30/05/2021 01:13

How long did it take and was there any connection to it being there after naps or eye rubbing etc

SofiaAmes · 30/05/2021 01:27

I would go to your gp and ask to be referred to an ophthalmologist. My ds had an lopsided squint which we noticed around age 2 or 3 and was referred by the GP to an ophthalmologist and it turned out he had astigmatism in both eyes and needed glasses and had mild Browns Syndrome. He actually outgrew the astigmatism (and the need for glasses) and the Browns by 5 or 6, but the lopsided squint turned out to be his tell for his migraines (all different types: ocular, head and abdominal), and he continued to have eye issues of other sorts as he got older (issues with pursuits and saccades - which affects reading). It was useful to have the history of having diagnosed eye issues when he was younger, to get them to deal with the older ones more quickly instead of brushing me off as a helicopter parent. Some of the issues were remedied with exercises, so it was in fact important to get them recognized quickly and early.
(Eventually it turned out he had a genetic disease which caused poor tendon and muscle formation which was underlying all of these issues).

Hello all, this thread pops up when I search about mild ptosis which I think my 14 mo old has. I can relate so much to all of these comments-I know it’s from last year but how are everyone’s babies doing? Any updates? We have eye appointment in January.

Did ypur little one's eyes ever change to match? Thanks.
