Son (1) getting hives on face, but only when awake. Doctor has no idea?

Randomly on Saturday my son got some hives on his face. Since then, whenever he is awake they come back. Whenever he sleeps they vanish. There is nothing online about something like this and the doctor has no idea and said wait a week. It makes no sense. Nothing has changed and why on earth would it come and go depending on whether he is asleep?

Because when he is awake he is touching his face and something being transferred is causing the hives

Allergy/sudden sensitivity to shower gel/hand wash/washing powder?

I've experienced the same in the past. (At a time I was particularly stressed.) I have to be careful now about the type of soap and other products I use.

My DD started having similar hives on her face and then we linked that it was happening after she was holding her Guiney pigs. An allergy which appeared suddenly after having Guiney pigs for 3 years.

You don't say how old your son is but could it be stress? When my son was a toddler once he had an almighty tantrum and it caused his whole face and body to be covered in hives and once he calmed down they also went down.

Probably a daft suggestion but thought worth mentioning.

I'm not even sure if they are proper hives. They are red and raised and sort of come and go. They look like hives, just smaller and more spotty.

When he wakes up he's clear, but normally at some point in the day they will explode. They can come and go quite suddenly. Seems to happen most when he's outside. Mostly gets on his cheeks and a few here and there on his arms /legs. Never on torso.

He's only 14 months and it started randomly a week ago. Skins a nightmare at best of times due to eczema, but this doesn't act like that.

He's not bothered by them, but it does look rather unpleasant. I half wondered whether pollen might be causing due to it being worse when out. It's not food related as never coincides with meals or snacks.

Maddening.

Is he touching grass then his face. I get hives from grass pollen

SunbathingDragon · 03/07/2020 21:05

I’d keep a diary of what he does each day so you can start to link it. Then if you establish it only happens when outside, you can start to be much more specific with your notes to try to narrow it down.

I was about to say, grass pollen allergy maybe. do you put suncream on him? DS is much older now, he's 13 and has no allergies to anything except that he comes up in hives whenever I try a new/different suncream on and there's only one brand I can use.

My son had this as a toddler. It turned out he was allergic to cows milk and ate cereal when he woke up x

I wouldn't be surprised if grass pollen. The times it has happened worse he was around freshly cut grass, and once playing with it. Interesting.

My daughter gets bad hayfever, but just the usual symptoms. I will start keeping a diary.

I had a sun allergy when I was a child, it lasted for one year. I would get hives every through a window.
