My 12 week old is refusing bottles in this heat

In the last 3 to 4 days shes gone from her usual 6 bottles a day to just 3. Shes still sleeping 10 hours at night (I know I'm lucky to have a good sleeper) I just worry that shes not hydrated enough. I know you're not supposed to give them water (so my hv told me) but I'm wondering if I should try. As of right now its 1.24pm and shes been awake since 8 and shes only had 1, 6oz bottle and has refused any more. That first bottle I had to fight with her to have

Any advice appreciated

You can give water. An oz here and there. If you are from the uk check the NHS website as it states you can give cool boiled water inbetween feeds. Give it a go.

sarahloubert · 25/06/2020 19:45

Thank you i will give her some cooled boiled water. Shes just so miserable in this heat today and its horrible not knowing exactly what is bothering her. Although a cool bath has just cheered her up a bit x

I know. My baby is the same. Just keep baby as cool as you can even if your bathing all day. Definitely either the cool boiled water. I've given mine 2oz inbetween his feeds and it hasnt affected his milk at all. I worry me more at night time xx

underneaththeash · 25/06/2020 22:53

Also make sure she's not overdressed - a nappy only is fine in this heat. I saw a baby out in a hat this morning!

sarahloubert · 26/06/2020 07:11

Well I tried water. She also refused. She slept all night as usual and had just woken up. Went to change her nappy and it was bone dry. The line was still yellow and her nappy wasn't even damp. Just given her morninf bottle shes drank 2oz and is now refusing. Im not sure what to do now. Shes fine in herself, her usual happy little face. Im wondering whether to buy some baby juice and water it down with some boiled water just for a bit of taste to see if she will drink that? Her waking up with a completely dry nappy is concerning me 🤔

It might be she's ready to change teats, I had it around the same age with my eldest, refused to feed and hardly took any..turned out size 1 wasn't flowing quick enough and was tiring him out trying to get more out, making him nod off on a bottle when he had only had 2 or 3oz.

Might be worth a try in case.

WishMyNameWasWittyNotShitty · 26/06/2020 07:36

Just seen about the dry nappy, I would contact you GP now, she could be getting dehydrated a bit

AllTheUserNamesAreTaken · 26/06/2020 07:42

If her nappy is bone dry after a night’s sleep when she hasn’t taken much milk or water yesterday then I would contact the GP.

Contact Gp for advice

Update

Shes already on size 2 tear and has been for a good 4 weeks as she was getting really frustrated with size 1. I sat on the bed with her and every time she pushed the bottle out I waited a couple of mins and tried again. It took just over an hour but I managed to get her to drink 6oz milk. And has just had a really wet nappy! Will see how she goes today with milk intake and if its the same as yesterday I will take her to the gp. Thanks everyone for your replies. Shes currently lying on a towel nappy-less and loving life haha x

Aw bless her

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 26/06/2020 10:34

Can you chill the milk once it's been made? It could just be that she doesn't want a warm drink.

WishMyNameWasWittyNotShitty · 26/06/2020 10:58

Aww bless her!

MoominKitty · 26/06/2020 11:07

My 6 month old is the same, I've taken to waiting till he's just fallen asleep in my arms then sneak a bottle in, he takes about 4oz like that and I know he's had some.

I also give him a wetish clean cloth to bite on as will wet his mouth etc (teething atm so bottles are the devil according to him Hmm ).

100% keep offering a few sips of cooled boiled water in the heat for formular fed babies, I've got cool damp bump cloths on hand to to wipe him down every now and then too.

Akasia · 26/06/2020 11:11

Had same happening with my babe and found that feeding in bouncer helped (maybe not getting as hot?)

sarahloubert · 26/06/2020 11:38

Shes having a good snooze at the min. Shes had 2oz of water and pulled her face at every sip (dont think shes a fan lol) still not drinking like usual but im getting it into her. Shes going to be sick of the sight of me and a bottle soon lol. She has her 2nd injections on Monday so I will mention all this to the nurse just to make sure I've done everything I could. I've put a pack of wipes in the fridge so I can wipe her down every so often which she enjoys. I've got a 13.5 year gap so I feel like a newbie again 🤣

It's all trial and error I think lol.

He's my first and haven't seen a HV since he was 10 weeks due to lock down so I've been scouring old mumsnet posts for hints and tips tbh.

Some worked some didn't but he's growing and happy so far 😂

sarahloubert · 26/06/2020 16:34

Well my 13.5 year old is still with us so I must have done something right lol. This covid situation is just making things more complicated. Cant say I'm comfortable with over the phone health visitor appts x

OP posts:
MoominKitty · 26/06/2020 17:21

I've not even had a call, bar the one saying no visits due to covid!

sarahloubert · 27/06/2020 15:21

I'm not overly impressed with how we've been left hanging really. I know there's precautions that need to be made but how can you tell how a baby is over the phone? My DD is still not having her full feeds. Yesterday only had 18oz all day and so far today has only had 12oz. But were having wet nappies so shes clearly not dehydrating. This weather is just so heavy. We've had plenty of rain today but its still so warm!

How old is your little one? If you haven't heard from anyone I'd give your midwife or HV a call x

MoominKitty · 27/06/2020 15:54

Mines oy had 12 today too, had 26 yesterday though so win lol.

My boy is a week off 6 months so 25 weeks, I have been offering water and he's having a yog a day now and porage (tiny tiny amount) but I'd like to know he's doing okay I'm weighing him by weighing me and him then me on my own and subtracting 😂.

The number I have rings out so God knows! Lots of missed neglect due to all this I feel. Angry
