Concerned About Flat Head

Hi,

I've noticed my 10 week old is developing a flat spot on the left side of his head as a result of favouring his left side since birth. I've tried everything from having him sleep on a LoveNest pillow, repositioning when asleep, and minimal time spent on his back when he's awake, but it still seems to be getting worse.

Has anyone had any experience with Plagiocephaly? Did it improve on its own or were further steps needed? I'm not really wanting to spend £2k on a helmet and it's difficult because most GPS will tell you it's fine and will fix itself.

I've attached some photos of his head and would love some advice!

Thank you in advance :)

I was concerned about my baby's head shape and sought the help of an osteopath. I also had a consultation with one of the providers of helmets and they were very helpful and told me that they didnt think the issue warranted the use of a helmet.

Dd always slept on one side of her head when on her back and the opposite side when she slept on me during daytime naps. She started to look like her head had been in a vice! I just turned her head whenever I noticed and it helped a lot. Her head is still not completely the right shape but I don't think anyone's really is, people just stop analysing it the older you get.

Thanks @Greybearskip and @KellyHall, your replies are much appreciated. I've got a phone consultation with an osteopath next week who'll judge if he needs to be seen in person or not; from what I've read cranial osteopath treatments can do the world of good for Plagiocephaly, so fingers crossed. And Kelly, I suspect there might be a bit of torticollis going on as whenever I try to move his head to look the other way it's so stiff and he really fights me on it, to the point where as soon as I get it over to the other side he turns it right back.....it's a constant battle! My oldest son had a touch of brachycephaly which is almost unnoticeable now, however I feel flat spots on the side of the head like my youngest has is a lot more concerning and more difficult to cover up. Hopefully it gets sorted soon 🤞

Thank you both again.....

My dd had this. I noticed it at about 8 weeks and totally panicked. She did have torticollis and we saw a physio and did some exercises to loosen her neck so it didn't get any worse. I was so gutted because she had such a perfect little round head when she was born. I also looked into helmets and was advised not to subject her to it. So glad I listened. She's now 4 and although I'm vaguely still aware of her having a slightly uneven shaped head still, she has lots of hair and literally no one else would notice. I doubt she'll even ever notice. Definitely get the torticollis seen to, but once she has a bit of hair you'll forget all about it!

My baby girls head looked a lot like that, I tried repositioning her but she always went back to her favoured side. However, with a lot of tummy time, baby wearing and sitting her in her bouncer/jumparoo when old enough you cant tell, it's certainly not perfect but it's an awful lot better than it was, she almost had a corner at the top of her head on her favoured side, this has since sorted itself. I never used or sought advice from an osteopath
