Omeprazole Help

Hi, my DS (4 months) has just been prescribed Omeprazole for his reflux and I just wanted to know peoples thoughts on it.

DS is vomiting constantly throughout the day and will wake up at night every 1.5/2hrs which is so draining. The doctor thinks this is due to reflux keeping him awake. Although he vomits a lot, he isn't unhappy so I'm concerned it may not be reflux if he's not in discomfort. We were initially prescribed infant gaviscon but he didn't get on with that at all. Because a doctor can't actually see him at the minute, I'm concerned to give him actual medication if he doesn't need it but at the same time am totally exhausted. He is gaining weight well, but is constantly feeding to make up for all the sickness. Could it be something other than reflux as he doesn't seem to be in pain?

I'm exclusively breastfeeding and DS refuses to take to a bottle so I'm also worried about how we can administer the omeprazole.

Any advice much appreciated!!

Has anyone mentioned CMPA?
My 4 month old had horrific reflux, would vomit up at least 2oz out of a 6oz bottle, mucusy poops, dry skin.
She also had a lot of pain.
Started an amino acid formula as recommended by a paediatric consultant, it has improved everything, normal level of spitting up milk, hardly any pain, and the reflux symptoms have almost completely disappeared.

I should add, that the GP wouldn’t give omeprazole without excluding CMPA first

If he’s not unhappy or in discomfort it’s unlikely to be CMPA or acid reflux. Omeprazole doesn’t stop the vomiting either, it just reduces stomach acid. I think 4 months was about the peak of reflux for my DD so hopefully it should start improving soon!

It's really really tough. Two of my children had a silent reflux, and were in anguish with it. Notoriously difficult to diagnose. Both also had cows milk protein allergies as well. I think it's common to have both.
Try eliminating dairy from your diet and see if that helps?
The omeprazole was a life changer. Literally. Different child. Finally started sleeping better and then so did we.
It's hard to take, especially as a breast feeding baby. They give it to you in a tablet form rather than a suspension.
We had to grind it down with a mortar and pestle, add water and place it in a medicine syringe to administer. It doesn't dissolve properly either. Total faff. But definitely worth a shot.
We also tried adding it to yoghurt or fruit purée once we started weaning.
By about age one, the reflux had dissipated and with the help of a dietician, we were able to wean them back on to dairy.

Thanks all! Interesting that it may not be acid reflux as Picklerick87 said as he isn't in discomfort. I'm really not sure about giving him Omeprazole without being 100% sure he needs it...

It could therefore be an intolerance I guess? Or would he be in discomfort with that?

No one takes meds because they're 100% sure that they'll work!

It could potentially be an intolerance - usually with a dairy allergy/intolerance the baby would be getting stomach cramps, diarrhoea or constipation, and sometimes rashes/eczema. You could always try cutting out dairy for a few weeks to see if it makes a difference to the vomiting?

DD was a happy puker for the first few months. She would spit up 20+ times a day. Then it just randomly stopped. She's 16mo and hasn't been sick in over a year. We never bothered with medication as she was happy and her weight gain was fine. It just caused a lot of extra laundry!
