Sudden allergy to bedroom - blocked nose

DS has suddenly developed an allergy, where his nose is completely blocked and he is sneezing constantly. I'd say it started about four - five weeks ago. I assumed it was hayfever but we have been keeping an eye on it and it is definitely much worse indoors than out and at its worst in his room / in bed at night.

Here's what I've tried:

  • when it's bad at bedtime he gets an antihistamine. This helps him fall asleep but he is totally blocked up the next morning.
  • I have been damp dusting and hoovering his room with a new hoover (Miele with HEPA filter)
  • his bedding is all non-down
  • I have put allergy encasings on his mattress, pillow and duvet
  • I have removed an old chair from his room.

None of these seem to have made much impact. I have hayfever myself (allergic to tree pollen and cat and horse hair), so I fully appreciate how miserable he is.

Can anyone recommend anything I haven't tried? I am going to take him to the doc next week.

Thanks!

Hi @Snarktastic! No we haven't made much progress. We have removed cuddly toys from bed and freezered his fave much to his horror (told him to imagine she was on a ski holiday Grin). Keeping his room tidier, damp dusted and hoovered and his bed linen is changed regularly.

He is having good and bad days. I can't be sure it is coming from his room, but am equally unsure if it's from outside.
I still haven't taken him to the doctor and I really must do that this week. But I suspect there is no easy answer to this.
I did get him allergy nasal spray from the chemist which is effective but he hates. I can relate to that as I find it very abrasive.

I had faced relative sickness in 2009 and later it continued for quite some time. I tried several things that didn't worsen my sickness. A few weeks back, I was looking for an air purifier that helps me in keeping up my health. I checked a number of reviews and found this one: bestkitchenbuy.com/levoit-air-purifier-reviews/ the most relevant. It will solve all your queries so, you can decide whether you have a requirement of it or not.

My daughter has multiple allergies causing allergic rhinitis. Since she turned 11 her allergies have become severe. With her dust mite allergy she started to wake up every morning sneezing, congested and fatigued. I was hoovering her carpet in her room like a crazy person, until I realised that it was actually making her symptoms worse. I have since removed the carpet from her room with hard wood flooring. I damp wipe it down every evening before she goes to bed. She has allergy friendly bedding, mattress and pillows encased. No soft toys on her bed. No soft furnishings in her room and bed linen washed on hot every 3rd day. This has helped massively. Small things can still set her off....cushion on the sofa downstairs...or just something random. It is very upsetting and frustrating for both her and the family. And a huge amount of work. Trying to cope with it all is very difficult.
