Hi,

Just wondering if anyone can offer any help or advice for my LO’s recovery from his circumcision. He is due to go to hospital next week and just wondered if anyone has any advice about his comfort and recovery?

Thanks

This won't end well.

Can I ask if this is a medically driven procedure given it’s happening in hospital, and what were the indicators that it’s needed? I ask because I think I may need to address this with the GP for my school age child

i suggest you ask elsewhere, maybe families that have made this choice for their sons

If it was advised by a medical professional you should have been given extensive information prior to consenting and the ward will provide aftercare instructions and follow up details on discharge?

missyB1 · 06/06/2020 18:25

Is it a medically advised circumcision? I’m guessing it is as he’s booked for a hospital procedure. My ds needed this done at age 12. Took about 3 weeks recovery as he unfortunately developed a slight infection. He didn’t play any sport at school for a month. The first week he needed painkillers.

Bourbonbiccy · 06/06/2020 18:31

Firstly, I can't really see this going well on here, people get a bit shouty over this type of thing.

How old is your LO as this would have to be considered in the advice surely ?

We had the option to circumcise our son at about 2 months old, it could have been classed as medical apparently, we opted not to and said we will see how things progress.

ArdoCycle · 06/06/2020 18:32

He’s 13 - I initially posted in chat - so have had come good advice on that thread. Thanks for the advice 👍🏻

My husband needed it doing, a bit younger than that but he said he remembers it being agonising.

I would say be ready for a few weeks recovery, lots of painkillers and waiting on him. Even when he feels better, he will need to just take it easy, hence the few weeks.

Anything better than that is a bonus.

I just keep thinking having a wee will be stingy!

I can’t remember ds having trouble peeing but he did need regular pain relief the first week and I kept him off school for at least a week.

ArdoCycle · 06/06/2020 20:33

I suppose that’s one benefit of schools being closed

Did the hospital not talk this owner with you both?

chilledteacher · 06/06/2020 20:37

DS1 has it done for medical reasons at 6. The advice we were given by the hospital was to buy massive pants! So at six he was rocking around in 9-10 underwear and pyjamas for a few weeks. Recovery took a couple of weeks (he developed an infection) and was waking like a cowboy for about a week. But within a month he was back to his normal self but it took a while before it looked less angry.

chilledteacher · 06/06/2020 20:38

Had it done

TheHighestSardine · 06/06/2020 20:42

Having a wee won't be a problem, the urethra isn't affected by circumcision. It's very very sensitive flesh though, so it's going to be massively uncomfortable verging on painful. Just think of a slice around your clitoral hood, same sensitivity level (same biological structure too).

He should have some significant painkillers come home with him. Make sure that's the case. Aftercare will be discussed, one of you must there to get that knowledge as he'll not be in the best of minds for it.

Baggy pyjamas and lots of sleep to get through it quicker. And definitely no wanking, though he'll doubtless work that one out by himself...

ArdoCycle · 06/06/2020 20:51

Because of the Covid thing we haven’t had the proper consultation process so they haven’t really talked through recovery etc, but presumably we will get some input after the procedure. I just wanted to have things ready if we needed anything special, so maybe some big pants and new jammies
