Horrendous rash. Docs stumped. Ideas?

DD started developing this rash yesterday, but came up a lot worse over night, and has had a mild temp that comes down with calpol.
Doc emailed the pictures to the hospital paediatrician who wasn’t sure.
Rash is not itchy, but painful.
She’s a bit off, but not seriously unwell.

Is it only down one side? It looks a bit like a shingles rash.

bluefoxmug · 23/05/2020 19:40

a staph infection?

Rallyaround · 23/05/2020 19:41

All over torso and some on arms and legs.
Dog didn’t think staph infection. Would that need AB’s?

Saw this earlier - might be worth checking

DD used to get a similar rash like that after milk, but I think her spots were slightly smaller.

ShambalaHambala · 23/05/2020 19:49

Have you been in a hot tub or swimming pool recently?

Aquamarine1029 · 23/05/2020 19:49

Good grief, the poor thing! I would be getting her checked out right away.

ShambalaHambala · 23/05/2020 19:50

Sorry *has your dd

sleepyhead · 23/05/2020 19:50

How old? Is the rash fairly symmetrical and did you by any chance notice a lone patch a few days before?

Ds1 had something called pityriasis rosea when he was 13 - apparently common in teenagers. Was similar in appearance although maybe not as red.

youwereagoodcakeclyde · 23/05/2020 19:52

looks like chickenpox to me

ElectricTonight · 23/05/2020 19:55

Oh no that looks awful! It looks really angry, I'd ask for a second opinion if that's possible.

concernedforthefuture · 23/05/2020 20:00

Was also going to ask about hot tub / paddling pool. My kids had a similar rash a couple of days after going in a paddling pool on a very warm weekend. They'd caught a bacterial infection, 'hot tub foliliculitis'. They had a slight temp and were a bit 'off' but not too bad. It cleared up after about a week.

Rallyaround · 23/05/2020 20:02

She’s 8. And it came up very suddenly because there was nothing there after the bath on Wednesday night.
No hot tubs etc. She hasn’t even mingled with anyone at all during lock down.
The registrar said they were almost certain it wasn’t a COVID related rash. They are just baffled same as me.
I haven’t changed anything in the house or anything.
It’s just happened very suddenly.
She got a bit of a fright in the mirror and was a bit upset. I’ve put virasoothe on it as that’s all I can really do.

I said to the doc about folliculitis because they went in the paddling pool on Wednesday, but he said it’s only hot tubs and swimming pools with heat?

HSP? Can’t spell the full name but you can google the acronym.
My DD had joint pain and tummy pain in the days before hand which is apparently typical.

ElectricTonight · 23/05/2020 20:14

It does resemble folliculitis.

Doingmybest4u · 23/05/2020 20:14

My daughter had a possible diagnosis of hepatic eczema (look up Eczema herpeticum). She had eczema and then developed an awful rash - doctor said she could have come into contact with someone with herpes which infected her skin (doesn’t mean she carries the herpes virus as far as I understand). More susceptible because she had eczema which wasn’t well controlled. Rash wasn’t quite the same as your pics but maybe suggest it. Our diagnosis came from a dermatologist. Poor kid - hope you get sorted x

concernedforthefuture · 23/05/2020 20:30

@Rallyaround Mine got it from a paddling pool, not a hot tub. I think the bacteria only breed above a certain temp which is why it's more common in hot tubs but in warmer weather, you can absolutely get it from any untreated water that's sat around for a bit (ours were in and out the same water all weekend). Dr was quite sure that's what it was as they only had it on their trunk, arms and legs (I.e the bits that were actually in the water).

Rallyaround · 23/05/2020 22:50

Yea looking online it does seem likely to be folliculitis. And to top it off my younger one now has a few spots coming up when I was getting her changed for bed.
Online it just says that they should go on their own unless they become infected. So I’ll just keep them clean and see how we go. My older one had paracetamol before bed as hers are very painful.

How are your children today @Rallyaround ?

Rallyaround · 24/05/2020 22:04

Much the same! Older DDs rash is still quite bad and white heads are starting to appear. She’s had a bit of a headache today but still eating and drinking fine.
Younger DDs is a little worse but still not too bad and is neither up nor down.
I might give out normal surgery a call tomorrow and see if I can speak to our normal doctor. They may be able to swab as they should have the kits there. The out of hours isn’t well equipped in comparison.
