What are these marks on my daughters forehead?

Hi!

Over the past 3 months I’ve noticed these brown looking marks on my daughters forehead. She is almost one year old, is not taking any medication and these do not seem to bother her.

I do have a an appointment with a dermatologist in a months time but I’m quite anxious about what they are. From my reading they seem to be cafe au lait but someone has suggested they are another hyperpigmentation. As there are several of them, this could be something serious if they are cafe au lait.

Any suggestions/guidance would be appreciated!

Has your DD been around any new flowers, greens? We had a very similar marks on my youngest DD. She had been playing with a Scandinavian plant which induced photosensitivity (mainly on her legs as she had been running in a field of them). It was harmless and she was fine, we just had to keep her out of the sun.

Impossible to tell from the photos though... the dermatologist needed some time to figure it out - and I had a vague recollection of my granny earning me about a certain plant. Then we put it together...

Thank you for your response!

It is quite coincidental that these marks have arisen since the start of spring and since we have sat outside a fair amount.

I do appreciate your comment as it does go to show there are other possibilities other than cafe au lait.

Hope you find some answers and that it is something benign.

Maybe have a search for local poisonous plants? Or other things your DD may have come into contact with?

As we live in London (where that particular plant didn’t exist) and DD was exposed on holiday, it took me finding the relevant Scandinavian plant online (from memory of what DD has played with) and emailing the name to the dermatologist. I only went down that road as I had this vague recollections of being warned off certain plants as a child.

The dermatologist then looked at the plant description and properties and confirmed that the rash was consistent with plant induced photo sensitivity. It took several weeks (or maybe even months) for the marks to disappear, being fully covered in the sun helped prevent more ...

Best of luck!!

It seems quite a challenge to trace all that she may have been in contact with in the outside world!

Following on from your feedback I did some research and I came across ‘photocontact dermatitis’ which I am guessing is what you might be referring to?

I guess we won’t know for sure until we get around to going to see the paediatrician. Thanks again for your input Smile

I think that was it (but I am not a doctor!). I looked at the online pictures and they looked nothing like my DDs did though Confused. They are gone now, so cannot send a picture. Smile
