Temperature in shielded baby

Hi, we’re shielding my baby as she’s an ex premie who had chronic lung disease, and I’m a bit baffled by the fact she’s had a temperature overnight. It’s only up to 38.5 and coming down with calpol so I’m not overly concerned and would normally put it down to a little cold or something, but it can’t be that. She’s 7 months corrected - could it be teeth? My last child had no teething symptoms. She’s behaving and feeding normally if a little tetchy.

You shouldn’t much around with someone in the shield category with a raised temperature

Leaving aside CV, we are nearly all at greater risk of sepsis.

For most shield conditions, you can bypass 111 by ringing the consultant team directly.

I’d urge you to do that now

Does the shielding letter say what to do if the baby becomes unwell?

If not, I’d ring 111 straight away, and seek advice. The official nhs stance on teething is that it cannot cause temperatures.

No it won't be teething, as it's a myth that teething causes temperatures. Illnesses cause temperatures so I would call for advice.

I’ve spoken to the GP and we’ve got hold of some antibiotics in case of ear infection and I’m obviously keeping a very close eye on her. She’s eating well and alert, just a bit hot and grumpy. Hopefully they will start woking by tomorrow, will keep up with the calpol for now.

I hope you had an undisturbed night

Even if your DC is improving, in your shoes I would seek at least a telephone call to the consultant (or one of the team) that put you on the shielding list.
