2.5 year old complains of lower back pain

Hi all

my 2.5 year old DS (dear son) has been complaining for the past 4, 5 days that his lower back hurts. He just started saying that in the evening around 7pm and when he would lie in his bed to sleep but he wasn't actually showing to be in pain. He would just say "my back hurts" and continue with doing whatever he was doing. Yesterday in the carseat after about half an hour he started to whine and complain about his back again, this time he was a bit teary eyed, and as soon as he complained he fell asleep. So maybe he was tired? When he got out of the car he was fine, playing and running and jumping as usual. Later in the evening again he complained but didn't actually show to be in pain.

Today he has been complaining since morning, but again doesn't show to actually be in pain....

A couple of other things, he generally complains about random stuff aching, like hit foot, his leg, his arm, his tummy but doesn't really seem to be in pain. Also my husband for the past couple of months had a sore lower back and was moaning about his back... so maybe he is mimicking that behaviour?

I am taking him to the doctor today just to be on the safe side, but I am wondering if anyone else had a similar experience? I googled this online (I know I shouldn't have) and found some pretty scary stuff!

Thanks!

Is he perhaps a bit dehydrated? Could be his kidneys or a UTI?

Having said that, my son is a similar age and just recently has been saying 'my tummy hurts' or 'I don't feel well' but then when I ask him to explain he just says 'I'm happy now!', so I do think sometimes it's an attempt at connection, so I try to up my game when that happens!

Could be something like a uti but my ds is the same age and says random body parts hurt all the time, he usually does it to get a plaster!

He could well be copying your husband or maybe he’s constipated?

Hi all
Thank you for your comments. I wanted to give a quick update. We noticed that when in the car seat it did actually hurt him, he was crying and saying his back hurts. At other times he might not even mention it, or just say “my back hurts” but not actually seem to be in pain.

The doctor said it’s probably nothing but just to be safe (because it’s not a very common complaint) he ordered blood tests and a full abdominal ultrasound. All was fine so the doctor said we discretely keep an eye on him.

Interestingly, the day after we took him to the doctor a bruise appeared on his lower back so it’s very likely he did hurt himself somewhere. The bruise has faded now and today in his car seat he said “ah! My back doesn’t hurt!” Grin sure enough, half an hour later he complained again but he sort of just mentioned it, he didn’t show to be in pain...

Another thing I’m thinking is that it seems he misinterprets different sensations as pain. For example when his leg is itchy he says it hurts. Or when they put the jelly on his belly for the ultrasound again he was saying it hurts. In general he keeps saying different body parts hurt, so probably it’s a combination of him actually hitting his back, mimicking his dad a little bit, and being a 2 year old!

I hope it’s nothing serious
