1 year vaccinations - is this normal?

My DS has his vaccinations last week. The nurse said that after 6-10 days he may get a temperature, rash and another symptoms from the MMR vaccine. On day 7 the symptoms struck - high temp, not eating, very lethargic, viral type rash.
These symptoms have lasted for 4 days now. He’s hardly sleeping and when he does it’s a fretful sleep. Calpol is bringing his temp down to around 37 degrees but then after a couple of hours it’s back up to 38.5 and doesn’t seem to be coming down. We’re all exhausted and up for hours in the night with him crying. He’s drinking plenty of water and still having some milk but doesn’t really want to eat anything other than puréed food or yogurts. He’s not wanting any of his normal food, not even toast. He won’t play and just sits with us all day and is so tired but can’t properly sleep :( is this normal? I expected this to go on for a couple of days but it’s been four days now. I phoned our doctors yesterday afternoon and I’m still waiting for her to give me a call back to discuss it. Did any of your DCs react like this? I will add that we did have a rough couple of days with all his previous vaccinations too - but it’s never gone on for this long. Thanks

DS was hit quite hard by the 1 year jab too, it was a year ago but I do remember him having a prolonged period of 'eurgh' after it. He reacted to every single part of the vaccine so it seemed to go on forever

@TeddyBeans bless him, can you remember how long it went on for and did he go back to normal eventually?! It’s only been four days but I feel like this is never ending.

@Moonshine160 sorry I did reply this morning but it appears to have not posted!

I don't remember how long exactly but he was out of sorts for a while! I think I was alternating calpol and calprofen as well. Have you heard back from your GP yet?

My DS had quite a bad reaction too. He developed a bad cold type thing and eventually about a month later when the cough just wouldn't go, he ended up on antibiotics for a chest thing. I think it gives their immune system a bit of a kick! Definitely chat to the dr and hope he's himself again very soon.

Thanks both - yes they phoned back this morning. Apparently it can be normal to go on for a few days but if no change over the weekend then I’ve got to phone on Monday for an appointment.
He has since come out in some sort of rash all over his face and neck but his temperature does seem to be coming down and he was rolling around and giggling before bed so I’m hoping we might be getting over the worst of it!

Oh that's good news. Sometimes I find they get a rash when they are getting over a viral thing. A bit like they seem to feel better when they actually get the pox part of chicken pox.

@Moonshine160 I know this was 2 years ago but currently going through the same, how long did the symptoms last? We are day 7 since symptoms started, rash has almost disappeared but he's still not 100% and temp keeps rising randomly

Moonshine160 · 21/09/2022 19:59

@OLR92 hi lovely. From what I recall it took a couple of weeks for him to get back to normal. I remember how worried I was because he really wasn’t himself. He never reacted well to any of his vaccinations, I used to dread them! I think it can be normal though so try not to worry.

@Moonshine160 ahh thank you for your response! An awful little time for them, especially when they can't tell you what's wrong! We will hang on in there and hope we see some improvements over the next week 🤞🏼
