Threadworm

Just discovered my children have threadworms and suspect I do to. I've read quite a few horror stories on the internet and people are saying they had them for years etc couldn't get rid of them.

We've all taken ovex, I've been bathing in the morning, washing all towels, washing bedding every few days, wash all the teddies and damp dusted, used the steam cleaner.

Washing hands before eating.

My kids are 5 ,3 and 1. My 1 year old puts everything in his mouth. I suffer badly with anxiety and this is making me feel very anxious I'm a single Mum and given the current situation his is really stressful for me.

Has anyone else had threadworm? Was it easy to get rid of or did it keep coming back?

Ovex doses two weeks apart and normal hygiene should sort it. One of my children had them years ago....no sign of them after the first dose (believe me I worked myself into a right state checking for them).

My daughter had them. Got rid of them pretty easily. I might check tomorrow now though. It does make you paranoid and I am not normally ocd about anything. It passes.

Sounds as though you are doing all the right things. Make sure kids nails are short (and yours!) and use a nail brush, but the ovex should get rid of any wrigglers and your hygiene initiative should have cleared any remaining eggs. They are grim though,.

If you ever get them again throw any play dough or plasticine type stuff in the bin, advice I got from a nursery teacher.

Thanks for all your replies hopefully all this will do the job then. It is a really horrible thought think I'd rather deal with nits. Hmm

children get worms. Its so easy for them to pick them up. Ovex will do the job and then I think the only other thing to add to your list is to clean door handles and toilet flushes regularly. Also maybe make sure your DC wear PJ bottoms so they can't touch their bottoms as easily in the night.

If youre very concerned you can also put plastic toys through the dishwasher.

I had the wretched things for 18 months once. They kept coming back despite the ovex. You really have to keep washing everything over and over and wash your hands all the time.

Cranb0rne · 01/05/2020 19:10

Apologies but hope that doesn't add to your anxiety. Sounds like you are doing all the right things to keep them away. They have a life cycle of around 5 weeks so you just need to be mega hygienic for 5 weeks after taking the ovex.

Hi, just came on to post about this as I found threadworms on my daughter tonight for the first time. Hope to get some medicine tomorrow. I'm going to wash all the bedding and clean surfaces. They have loads of soft toys in the bedroom so not sure what to do about those.

catchyjem · 01/05/2020 22:45

Also, can't understand how she's caught them as we've been isolated since beginning of March! Can they incubate that long?!

LBNM19 · 02/05/2020 09:04

I didn't think of putting toys through dishwasher that would save time I haven't washed plastic toys we have so many of time. I just couldn't think of how I would be able to do them all.

I did steam cleaner toy kitchens and the bed as wooden, top of chest of draws and all the handles of the toy boxes.

@catchyjem I thought the same maybe we've had them for months and I just hadn't notice which makes me feel even worse. The kids have only been for a walk occasionally and not touched anything when out.

I washed all the soft toys the had out and they are currently on 'holiday l in a chest of draws in my room, you can also put them in bin bags for 3 weeks so no chance of eggs.

@Cranb0rne that is a very long time. Did you keep seeing them or just have symptoms. How did you finally get rid in the end?
