Broken toe?

Denver49 · 29/04/2020 17:31

My DS badly hit his end three toes on a sofa today. He’s 14. They are quite swollen and purple around his knuckles. He refuses to walk on his foot, but he can be ott with these things sometimes. To add to ‘this I also hit my pinky toe on a bathroom door, causing it to go deep purple and swell. Fun. Do my DS toes sound broken?

It's hard to tell with that description alone!
Can he move them
Pain score 0- no pain 10 - the worst pain ever!
Hear or feel any snap or crack?
Any broken bones before? Does it feel the same?

Denver49 · 29/04/2020 17:55

Pain-7
No movement of three end toes
Didn’t hear a crack
Broken left arm before, not as painful, but still very painful

How swollen compare to the other side?

Needs an X-ray then so best play is to self present to a walk in centre or Emergency Department

noblegiraffe · 29/04/2020 18:13

Do 111.nhs.uk/ 111 online and they will provably direct you to the nearest minor injuries unit.

Denver49 · 29/04/2020 18:15

His toes are swollen
Do you think they are broken
How could I treat them at home

Can't tell 100% without seeing them but sounds it.

Are you in the UK?

Ideally you need medical intervention as may not just be his toes

Denver49 · 29/04/2020 20:43

In the uk, I’ve got a broken toe, his may be broken. Can we both get treated at the same time

OP posts:
BabyST · 29/04/2020 21:27

Yeah course you can but you need to go to an Walk in Centre. If you go to a hospital then no you'll be treated with the adults

Denver49 · 29/04/2020 22:41

How can I treat one broken toe at home? I will just take DS to A&E so just he is seen as three of his toes are injured

BabyST · 29/04/2020 22:43

Ask then when you go 🤷🏻‍♂️

I suggest you call NHS 111 (to discuss it throughly with a more qualified person than us Mumsnet folks!)

My 13yo broke her big toe sliding over our kitchen floor, (think dramatic 'White Snake' moves!) a few months before lockdown. We spent a couple of hours in A&E Paediatrics before they sent us home saying - "yes it looks broken, but you can't do anything for a broken big toe, except wear this Velcro boot for a week or two"

Maybe you can avoid a trip to A&E? And just rest/protect it?

Denver49 · 30/04/2020 06:21

I probs can protect it, my son has badly injured three, he won’t be able to

No one on the internet can tell if your son's toes are broken.

Call 111 and they will send you to minor injuries unit where a Dr can assess him and X-ray if needed.

R0llonspring · 30/04/2020 08:05

Hi there, any news, have you called 111?

Reginabambina · 30/04/2020 08:07

For minor fractures you normally just tape the toe to the next one over/a splint until it heals up.

Denver49 · 30/04/2020 08:24

I have rang 111 as he is a child, they would like me to take him to be looked at. We are about to leave now, I will update when we return

It turns out he couldn’t walk because he broke his middle and fourth toe, had a really badly broken pinky toe, and cracked the head of his fifth metatarsal. They put him in a cast while the broken metatarsal heals. Is this right it seems ott

MilkNoSugars · 30/04/2020 13:38

Oh my goodness, he's done himself a real mischief there Shock

Hope he's ok and it's not too painful.

Denver49 · 30/04/2020 14:19

He’s alright, loving all the attention!
