Is this mark a bruise?

Does anyone know what this mark to the right of the pic is on my 16 month old? (Ignore the marks on the left, they are eczema patches)
It's at the top of his back, is it some sort of blood bruise? He is always running round the garden and is very boisterous so am not too concerned, but I have never seen a bruise like this before and the placement seems weird!

Does it blanch? Looks like petechia, which is shall bruises, I would seek medical advice if there is no explanation for them.

pinkapple1 · 27/04/2020 12:46

Small bruises should say

rebeccaelle · 27/04/2020 13:36

No it doesn't blanch, really don't want to go to the drs if possible with everything going on 😫

Looks like scratch marks which have bruised. Petechiae as PP says. I didn’t fully read your OP the first time and was going to ask if your son has been scratching the area, but then I saw you said the areas to the left of it are eczema so I think it’s most likely this is the explanation.

rebeccaelle · 27/04/2020 14:21

I did wonder if it was from scratching as I only noticed it this morning, and he definitely didn't have it last night before bed as I did all his moisturiser for his eczema.
He does itch like mad sometimes but I've never seen it look bruise like before!

I am fairly sure it is scratch marks and petechiae from that. As well as the pinprick purplish red marks on your photo you can also see linear pinkish marks especially over the top of his shoulder.

If he is unwell in any way or you’re at all concerned about him then it would be worth speaking to your doctor about it.

Friction burns?

rebeccaelle · 27/04/2020 16:09

Thank you so much for replying! I didn't know you could get something like that from scratching! I will just keep an eye on it, but he isn't acting any different than usual, he's been running rings round me as normal 😆
Friction could be possible I guess, he does like to itch his back like a bear for spots that he can't reach 🙈

It looks like dh's back when he's been carrying a heavy rucksack.

rebeccaelle · 27/04/2020 19:24

He's only just 16 months old, he definitely hasn't been carrying any heavy rucksacks 😆

Do you use a baby carrier?

Witchend · 27/04/2020 20:09

@rebeccaelle never know. When dd2 was about that age she decided to carry one that had been put down. It was so heavy that when she stood up with her on the back, she fell over backwards. Grin

rebeccaelle · 27/04/2020 22:36

@gower4 No I don't use a carrier anymore!

@Witchend ah really! 😆 there are luckily no backpacks anywhere in our house at the moment though! I only noticed it this morning and he definitely didn't have it before bed last night, so god knows what he's been doing in his cot last night!! 🙈

Just to update.. it definitely seemed to be from scratching. He scratched his neck this morning in lines like a bear scratch, and it has gone the same. I don’t know if he had a nail corner at a weird angle or something but I’ve just cut them all down to nothing 🤦🏻‍♀️
