Chest pains in 9 year old

DaanSaaf · 26/04/2020 11:18

Ds has complained of chest pains, on and off for about a year. They're not constant, he can go months without them and I'd put it down to growing pains.

Today it's hurting again, he's had them since waking up and says it keeps coming and going. He's laughing and playing as normal, but occasionally puts his hand on his chest and winces.

Any ideas what it could be?

Can I ask how you got on with this OP?

DS, who is nearly 7, had been complaining of similar on and off for about a month.

We spoke to the GP by phone consultation who didn't seem overly concerned but it's come on again today.

Gold,

Is it something new? Some things to consider would be

Musculoskeletal (I.e. Trauma)- has he had a fall? Any precipitating events?

Respiratory (i.e. asthma, bronchitis, ) - how is his breathing? Shallow, rapid? Any fever? Any cough? Colour of the sputum? Any signs of infection?

Cardiac(i.e. pericarditis/myocarditis, congenital defects ) can be caused by virus, can be congenital

My advice is to start a diary including what precipitated the chest pain and push a specialist referral.

Any emergency, 999

push the GP for specialist referral if the symptoms persist

Hi @nuttynutjob

It's been on and off for about 6 weeks, he never mentioned it before lockdown but said he had had them at school too, so at least a couple of months. No injury that we are aware of. Pain is to the left of his chest.

We asked him to let us know when they happened (sporadic, often during exercise or general 6 yr old hyper behaviour). He was reporting them quite frequently and we called GP who advised nurofen and to keep a mental note. That was 3/4 weeks ago and he hasn't mentioned it again, we asked him if it was all better and he said yes. That was until the last few days when he's mentioned them again (he did fall on the daily cycle two days ago and he did fall on his chest so perhaps it has aggravated it).

I'll certainly call GP again tomorrow

Could it be costochondritis? That is what the gp said regarding dnephew chest pain.

Possibly - I am pretty stumped but it's definitely not like him to continue to complain (but it's very sporadic and isn't unwell in any other way) - still charges around and climbs and plays normally.
